The European Union Ambassador to Tanzania and the East African Community (EAC), Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi, today presented his letters of credence to the EAC's Secretary General, Dr. Richard Sezibera at the regional body's headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
Ambassador Sebregondi was late last year appointed to represent the European Union in Tanzania and EAC by the European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Baroness Catherine Ashton.
His mandate covers overall representation of the EU and leading Member States on EU matters; political dialogue with Tanzania and EAC authorities;management of development assistance; trade relations; and public diplomacy with the host country.
This is the second time that Ambassador Sebregondi is representing the European Union in the African continent. He worked for four years as the EU Ambassador and the Head of Delegation for the EU in Ghana the role that included regional responsibility over the Delegation in Togo.
"The EU is committed to promote the regional integration as the main vehicle to opening the economies of the region and of the continent and to trigger trade, investments and economic growth through, among other things, the conclusion of an Economic Partnership Agreement with the EAC," said Ambassador Sebregondi.
