Dr. Gebisa Ejeta conducts a roundtable session with Sokoine University students in Morogoro, Tanzania on February 23.

U.S. Science Envoy Dr. Gebisa Ejeta visited Tanzania from February 20-24, 2012, following a six-day trip to Ethiopia. A prominent scientist and 2009 recipient of the World Food Prize, Dr. Ejeta is the Distinguished Professor of Plant Breeding & Genetics and International Agriculture at Purdue University. Dr. Ejeta was recently designated special advisor to United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah.

During his visit to Tanzania, Dr. Ejeta met with senior government officials and representatives from the scientific community in Tanzania, including Minister of Agriculture Jumanne Magembe.

He also visited the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), the Tanzania Academy of Science, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and the Mikocheni Agriculture Research Institute.

He also conducted roundtable sessions with students at the University of Dar es Salaam's College of Natural and Applied Sciences and Sokoine University in Morogoro, and participated in an interview at the Hamza Kasongo Hour on Channel 10.

In every venue, Dr. Ejeta emphasized that innovation has an essential role in promoting food security and economic growth, highlighted the importance of university partnerships for the scientific enterprise, while underscoring the relevance of sustainable development.

U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Dana L. Banks noted that the visit represents the United States' commitment to promote science and the development of Tanzania's agricultural sector.

"The overarching objective of the Science Envoy program is to advance opportunity, prosperity, and security worldwide by addressing issues of common concern. His visit represents an excellent opportunity to partner with Tanzanians in these endeavors to advance cooperation in areas of mutual interest," Banks said.

The U.S. Science Envoy Program has become a core element of the strategy for global engagement outlined in President Barack Obama’s June 4, 2009, speech in Cairo.

The U.S. Science Envoy Program sends eminent American scientists around the globe to engage with foreign governments, businesses, universities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to identify opportunities for sustained cooperation.
