A delegation of five members from the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives visited Dar es Salaam and Arusha on April 12 and 13 to promote stronger ties and security cooperation with Tanzania. Their visit included an April 12 meeting with His Excellency President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete at the State House to discuss bilateral and regional foreign policy issues of importance to both nations. The delegation of serving members in the Senate and House Armed Services Committees was led by Senator James Inhofe from Oklahoma, and included Senator John Boozman of Arkansas, Congressman Jeff Miller of Florida, Congressman Stevan Pearce of New Mexico, Congressman Vernon Buchanan of Florida, and four congressional staffers.
The delegation was welcomed to Tanzania by U.S. Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt, who accompanied the delegation during their visit in Dar es Salaam. They also met with East Africa Community Secretary General Dr. Richard Sezibera, and East Africa Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdirahin Abdi during their visit to Arusha.
In addition to Tanzania, the delegation's travel itinerary included visits to Ghana, Burundi, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.
Ambassador Lenhardt noted the congressional delegation's trip follows a series of visits by other senior U.S. officials during the past year. "Senator Inhofe's delegation's visit underscores the United States of America's commitment to expand its ties of friendship and cooperation with the United Republic of Tanzania," said Lenhardt.
The United States Senate is the upper house of the bicameral legislature of the United States, and together with the United States House of Representatives comprises the United States Congress.
