More than 1,200 workers at the beleaguered Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) have vowed not to resume work until their March and April salaries are paid, as operations completely ground to a halt.

The workers were assured that they would receive the delayed salaries by last Friday.

Workers Union of TAZARA General Secretary, Africa Mkandawire said yesterday that the workers had not been paid and that there was no communication from management by yesterday.

The passenger and goods trains were not operating as the company was facing a shortage of fuel.

Mr. Mkandawire said the workers were assured by both, the Managing Director Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika and Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga, who met the employees at the Kapiri Mposhi station on Wednesday last week that, salaries would be ready by Friday.

“The workers have still not received their delayed salaries for March and they do not even know when they will be paid their April salaries since the promise to pay the March salaries has not been fulfilled,” he said.

Mr. Mkandawire said the union representatives would again engage management today regarding the payment of the March and April salaries.

Only one cargo train laden with copper ore destined for Dar es Salaam in Tanzania managed to leave Kapiri Mposhi last week due to the biting fuel crisis.

He said passengers remained stranded as the firm had failed to raise money to buy fuel for the trains to be able to operate smoothly.

Operations between Kapiri Mposhi and Nakonde have virtually come to a standstill as the company problems deepen.
