Venu, Mars and the crescent Moon will be seen close together today in the evening soon after sunset close to the west horizon. See diagram below.

This evening, Tuesday 28 February, if you go out soon after sunset and look about 20 degrees above the west horizon you will see a thin crescent Moon left of the shining evening star which is the planet Venus. They will be about 10 degrees apart. Also, 10 degrees above Venus you will see a red star which shines with a steady light. This is Mars. Venus, Crescent Moon and Mars will form a right angle triangle and will present a beautiful sight in the night sky.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 01 March, the crescent Moon will shift upwards close to Mars and will be separated by about 5 degrees. The Venus, crescent Moon, Mars triangle will change to a thinner triangle.

If you look at Venus through a telescope you will be surprised to see that Venus is also seen as a crescent similar to the Moon !! When Venus moves around the Sun every 584 days it changes phase similar to the Moon which changes phase when it moves around the Earth.

Those who would like to look in further detail can take this opportunity to identify Uranus which is in between Mars and crescent Moon on 01 March. You will need to be in a dark sky in a rural area away from city lights which cause light pollution due to reflections from the atmosphere. Uranus remains close to Mars for several days while they move apart day by day.
