Minister of Industry and Trade in Tanzania, Hon. Innocent Bashungwa behalf of Prime Minister highly commended Huawei Tanzania’s efforts on ICT talents Eco-system development, pointing out that these efforts enhance employability and overall competitiveness of the local ICT work force.

This commend was made at the award ceremony of Huawei Tanzania ICT Competition 2019-2020 on Dec 13th in Dar Es Salsaam. That competition aims to provide a platform for global ICT talents to showcase their ability, compete and communicate, encouraging ICT-related study and drive the growth of a robust ICT talent ecosystem. 

The minister of Industry and Trade in Tanzania, Hon. Innocent Bashungwa said ICT is a critical part to Tanzania’s infrastructure development and a crucial enabler for Tanzania’s 2025 vision. Especially at the down of the 4th industrial revolution, ICT plays a pivotal role in shaping nation’s economy, providing answers to some social challenges, and enhancing inclusive and sustainable development by driving business growth, creating jobs and enhancing productivity and efficiency.

With the rapid development of the global digital economy, the World Bank's latest report points out that Sub-Saharan Africa's demand for digital skills in 2030 is as high as 230 million people. In Tanzania, there is a general shortage of ICT skills in both public and private sector.

“In developing ICT skills, talents is the most important capital. Lack of skilled people will limit our capability of adapting, managing and operating new technologies. The development of ICT human capital which needs to be addressed for full exploitation of benefits of the ICT sector by recognizing ICT professionals, and providing appropriate ICT skills and training to obtain a competent human resources base to accelerate Tanzania’s socio-economic development efforts in the information age.” said Bashungwa. 

Frank Zhou, the CEO of Huawei Tanzania clarified that Huawei the privilege working with Tanzania government and partners to provide connectivity to uncovered rural area by building low cost, solar powered and fast deployed base stations.

“Huawei Tanzania is proud to have been at the frontline in building a digital workforce, serving more than 35% of Tanzania’s population since our establishment in 2007, created more than 1000 jobs directly and indirectly, also provided training to more than 2000 ICT engineers.” said Frank Zhou.

To cultivate more ICT talents, Huawei Tanzania hold 2 corresponding talents program. The first one is job fair which been held on July 2019. Second one is ICT competition which is processing to be the second executive year for Huawei Tanzania to participate the global event. Over 2500 students from the various Universities across Tanzania are expected to participate in the contest with various subjects including network, cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence and big data under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future”.

Registration period for this competition was ends on 22th November, while preliminary ends on 27th November. Currently, Huawei Tanzania is ready to utilize all latest technology to support Tanzania digital transformation, especially in smart city and smart education. The registered students are able to access learning materials and certification portfolio provided by Huawei free of charge. Winner for preliminary will promote to a 5-days boot camp training for national final in Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology and University of Dar Es Salaam.

“We need a comprehensive approach of skills development for employment, enhanced productivity and growth. After all, the talents and knowledge will be the key factor to Tanzania industrialization and Vision 2025.” Zhou said.

These two initiatives epitomize Huawei Tanzania’s efforts on skill transfer and ICT skills gap bridging. The company has actively been working with government, industrial and academic partners in upskilling engineers, providing certification courses, sponsoring aboard studies and supporting government’s initiatives in promoting innovation and ICT learning. Huawei Tanzania has so far signed up 7 universities across Tanzania in establishing ICT academies, where students can access to industrially-recognized certification courses. In addition, the company has also organized together with its business partners several job fairs for over most beneficiaries of the ICT academy program and absorbed more than 80% of them.`
