FOUNDATION for Civil Society has been working hand in hand with People with Disabilities (PWDs) to advocate for their rights and engagement in the community. With the rise of the Novel Corona Virus outbreak in Tanzania, FCS has seen a need to address the issues around inclusivity of People with Disabilities in the fight against COVID-19.
At these uncertain times, FCS’s focus is to see an inclusive environment in the wake of the Corona virus pandemic which involves making sure information is well communicated in friendly formats i.e. Braille and large fonts; and making sure protective gears i.e. masks, sanitizers, etc are available to People with Disabilities.
Therefore today, on Friday, 15th May 2020, FCS handed over 10,000 masks and 2,500 sanitizers and copies of Brail books with information on how to fight against the virus for People with Disabilities amidst the course of the pandemic to the Federation of Disabled People Organizations (SHIVYAWATA: Shirikisho la Vyama vya Watu wenye Ulemavu Tanzania), which is an umbrella organization for Disabled People Organizations in Tanzania worth a total of 20,000,000 Tshs.
Speaking at the proceedings, Executive Director of FCS Mr. Francis Kiwanga, he said that one amongst the priorities of his organization is to work with disabled groups and to ensure that they get their rights. And thus to day we donated masks and sanitizers so they may help the disabled to protect themselves from the COVID-19 infection. We donate to make sure that no one is left behind In the fight against COVID-19.
Subsequently, the above undertaking is a step adding up to making sure that all members of the society, especially vulnerable groups are included in mitigation measures for COVID-19.
Also, the chairperson of SHIVYAWATA Ms. Ummy Nderiananga expressed her gratitude to FCS for the support because the disabled people were forgotten. She promised that the masks along with the sanitizers will be distributed to people with disabilities through their branches. She also emphasized that other stakeholders to continue to step forwards to help people with disabilities.
