THE Tanzania Young Women Environmental Conservation Group (TAYOWEC) has stressed the importance of Tanzanians using traditional medicine and traditional foods as part of treatment when they feel the need for treatment for various ailments.
According to TAYOWEC, they believe that natural remedies derived from plants as well as natural foods are a good remedy if the community has the right education to use these herbs in combination with natural foods.
In ensuring that education reaches the public. TAYOWEC, through its Green Grant Fund (GGF) project, has been conducting various activities in the Amani and Magoroto areas of Tanga region by ensuring that the community recognizes the importance of using natural remedies derived from natural trees and food nature.
Elaborating further, the Chairman of TAYOWEC Euphransia Shayo said they are involved in the work of providing education on environmental protection, so they have been able to carry out various activities in those areas.
Through this project, funded by the Green Grant Fund, we have been able to educate the public on the use and preservation of traditional medicines and natural foods as part of our health protection, especially during this period against Corona.
"We have done this project in Tanga Region in Muheza District, two areas of Amani and Magoroto by meeting with various community groups. We have provided education to young people of all genders, we have provided education to fathers and mothers. In this work we have been able to identify and identify more than 50 herbal remedies in these areas, "said Shayo.
He added that after discovering the drugs, they had provided education to the surrounding community because most of them were unaware of the drugs and their use, so they collaborated with a specialist in traditional medicine in combining them. " use them, in various treatments.
"We taught conservation and the main goal was to spread traditional medicine and indigenous foods knowledge from one generation to the next, that's why we were able to bring children together and teach them to the elderly," he said.
He also said that through the project, they have carried out various activities including the identification of these natural remedies, its storage and its use. They have also taught the public how to use natural foods as a remedy.
"In this project we have successfully established a natural tree garden with the specific aim of enabling the community to learn and conserve native trees that are in danger of extinction. In the garden there are more than 33 types of medicines that can be used for treatment. Through the garden, people will come and take medicine.
However, she said they will continue to encourage various groups to participate in caring for the environment with the aim of continuing to care for indigenous trees and food, the education they want to spread to all parts of the country and that is why they use the media to inform the public that there are natural remedies.
In addition, through the project they have visited the orchards of spices such as Iriki, Mango Pepper, Onion fasting and Mdalasini where they have used the opportunity to explain the importance of these organs in our bodies.
