The Open University of Tanzania (OUT), under the UNESCO Chair in Teacher Education and Curriculum, has launched a new training module titled “Competency-Based Digital Skills Training for STEM Teachers.” The initiative aims to empower Science and Mathematics teachers with digital tools and innovative teaching approaches to enhance learning outcomes.
Held online via Zoom on October 15, 2025, the launch brought together 30 STEM teachers from nine secondary schools in Iringa District Council, along with officials from Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the President’s Office - Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Iringa District Education Office and participating school head teachers.
Project Leader, Dr. Edephonce Nfuka said the training supported by the Global Partnership for Education - Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (GPE-KIX) through the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada, in collaboration with partner institutions from Nigeria, Bhutan and India. He noted that the module builds on the earlier Connected Learning for STEM (CL4STEM) project (2021-2024) and now focuses on competency-based digital skills, responsible AI use and sustainability through a Training of Trainers (ToT) approach.
Prof. Elifas Bisanda, Chairperson of the UNESCO Chair, commended the OUT team’s leadership and urged teachers to embrace innovative teaching methods. Mr. Ohadi Nosa, Head of Nyerere High School, announced plans to extend the training to all 53 district schools by 2026, citing positive outcomes from earlier projects.
Representing MoEST, Mr. Musa Mnyeti and Mr. Sitta Peter Ndamayape (on behalf of the District Education Officer) applauded the initiative, affirming government support and highlighting its alignment with national education and digital strategies.
The launch marks a major milestone toward strengthening teacher professionalism and advancing Tanzania’s vision of inclusive, technology-driven education.
