TANZANIA and Norway have reaffirmed their partnership in the agricultural sector, with a renewed focus on smart farming technologies aimed at boosting productivity and improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers.

During a courtesy meeting on 29th January 2026 in Dodoma, Hon. Daniel Chongolo (MP) met with H.E. Tone Tinnes, Ambassador of Norway to Tanzania, to discuss new strategies for agricultural cooperation. Minister Chongolo highlighted the importance of zoning farmland to meet specific agricultural needs, noting that modern technology could help maximize yields while conserving land.

“With advanced farming methods, 200 acres can produce what 1,000 acres would under traditional practices. This allows us to intensify productivity while preserving the environment,” said Hon. Chongolo.

Ambassador Tinnes praised Tanzania’s leadership in agriculture, describing the country as a “food basket of the region.” She also reaffirmed Norway’s commitment to supporting Tanzania’s growth, citing ongoing collaborations with institutions such as the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA); Private Agricultural Sector Support (PASS); Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI); and the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT/AGCOT).

On his part, Minister Chongolo welcomed Norway’s continued involvement, particularly in irrigation projects that enable farmers to cultivate three seasons annually. He also invited Norway to extend its support to the Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MJNUAT) in Mara Region, mirroring the assistance provided to SUA.

In essence, both sides emphasized that smart agriculture is not only about increasing profits but also about adding value, protecting the environment, and ensuring long-term sustainability for Tanzania’s farming endeavors.
