The Tanzania Bloggers Network (TBN) has reaffirmed its commitment to working with public and private institutions to produce and disseminate constructive content that educates the public and projects a positive image of Tanzania across digital platforms.
Speaking during a meeting between TBN leaders and a delegation from the Public Service Social Security Fund (PSSSF) at the TBN headquarters in Kijitonyama, Dar es Salaam, TBN Chairman Beda Msimbe said there had never been a more important time for Tanzania’s development achievements to receive greater prominence in the digital space.
He said this had become particularly important in an era when artificial intelligence enables information to be searched, retrieved and circulated more rapidly than ever before.
“It is embarrassing to see that much of the information about Tanzania dominating digital platforms and spreading around the world is driven by online gossip rather than meaningful development stories,” Msimbe said.
Citing a recent example, he said that while President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan was commissioning the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project—an undertaking of immense importance to the country—some of the most widely circulated online stories from Tanzania concerned the private lives and childbirth experiences of film and music celebrities.
Msimbe said the situation demonstrated the urgent need for institutions, media organisations and other stakeholders to work together to ensure that Tanzania’s development achievements receive the prominence they deserve on digital platforms.
“TBN is ready to collaborate with different institutions to increase the volume of positive information available across digital platforms. Tanzania should not be known merely for stories concerning people’s private lives, but also for its considerable economic and social achievements,” he said.
Msimbe welcomed PSSSF’s commitment to working with TBN to broaden public education on social security, pension systems and investments undertaken by the Fund.
He said TBN has more than 200 members based in Tanzania and the diaspora, all capable of reaching large audiences through a wide range of digital platforms.
“We are prepared to use the expertise, experience and extensive reach of our members’ platforms to provide accurate information about PSSSF’s activities, services, investments and the various systems it administers,” Msimbe said.
TBN Trustee Issa Michuzi said the network has played an important role in the development of digital journalism in Tanzania and is proud to have members possessing considerable professionalism, experience and capacity to reach audiences across the country and beyond.
Michuzi said TBN was established to ensure Tanzania is properly represented in the digital arena by disseminating accurate, constructive information that stimulates development and contributes to the growth of the national economy.
“TBN is ready to work with PSSSF to ensure that information about social security reaches the public in clear, accurate and easily understood language through digital platforms,” Michuzi said.
TBN Secretary Rahel Pallangyo said the network was prepared to deploy its experienced writers and members’ platforms to ensure that citizens receive accurate and reliable information.
She said such information would enable the public to understand its rights and responsibilities, as well as the opportunities available through the country’s social security systems.
Pallangyo added that collaboration between TBN and PSSSF could provide an important bridge between the Fund and the public, particularly at a time when digital platforms have become some of the country’s principal sources of news, education and knowledge.
Speaking on behalf of PSSSF, delegation leader Abdul Njaidi said the visit formed part of the Fund’s continuing efforts to build closer relations with media stakeholders and strengthen the provision of public education.
Njaidi assured TBN leaders that the requests, proposals and observations presented during the meeting would be carefully considered and acted upon.
He said PSSSF was committed to ensuring that Tanzanians receive comprehensive and accurate information about pensions, social security and the Fund’s investments for the benefit of its members and the nation at large.
The PSSSF delegation was led by Njaidi and included Regina Kumba, Grayson Mgunda and Doreen Lyimo.
TBN was represented by Chairman Beda Msimbe, Secretary Rahel Pallangyo, communications specialist Cathbert Kajuna and Trustee Issa Michuzi.
