Construction of Mbeya Market complete
Mbeya
Mbeya District Council has completed the construction of a modern market building in Inyala Ward with the aim of providing an outlet for agricultural products.
The project is also expected to raise the income of small-scale farmers. The building has cost the government 185m/-.
Speaking at a function to launch the market on Friday, the Coordinator of a programme to promote small-scale farmers in the Southern Zone, Aberhard Mbepera, explained that the facility has the capacity to accommodate 30 tonnes of various crops every day.
”This is a good opportunity for farmers in the district and beyond to sell and buy crops according to their needs,” he said.
He explained that the market would help farmers to earn a good income as they would be able to sell their products at good prices.
Currently, he said many farmers sell their products at throw-away prices because they are tricked by conmen.
”With the new market becoming operational, farmers would bring their products here and get a good price,” he stressed; adding that the market would also be a meeting point for traders and farmers.
Other investments that would be added to the market include guest houses, shops and restaurants.
