Dear Sir
Greetings from North Yorkshire, in England, where it is raining and cold.
I am a writer, and hope you may be able to answer a simple question for me. Many years ago in Mombasa, Kenya, I was given a kanga on which the two words ''limbukeni hajikisi'' were printed. No-one could tell me what they meant. Now, I have searched the internet and the only instance of these two words occurring together seems to be on your blog. I should be most grateful if you would be kind enough to give me an English translation.
With thanks and kind regards
Michael Gray

ReplyDeleteDirect translation is: "Lunatic never feel proud". But the exact meaning is that whoever very works hard for nothing, whichever he/she archieves is never felt. Or, in other words, come what may, I am ok. or I am proud for anything, equally, I am proud for nothing!
ReplyDeletemmmh yangu macho, hivi kumbe limbukeni ni mwendawazimu sikujua, ama kweli tembea uone.
ReplyDeletelimbukeni means somebody who have just came upon wealth or knowledge (something of value) after many people have gotten it.
ReplyDeletehajikisi means do not have limits. doesnt know when to stop.
limbukeni hajikisi means somebody who have just gotten something doesnt have limit in bragging about it......or doesnt have limits in showing off
wamezidi sasa hao kununua khanga bila kujua tafsiri, wakijua michuzi blog ndo kazi yake kutafsiri khanga, huko huko madukani wawaulize ndo wanunue!! je kama wametukanwa kwenye hizo khanga!!!! booo, tumechoka kufanya kibarua che kutafsiri. wanunue za maandishi ya kimombo, mbona zipo tu.
ReplyDeleteTo my understanding, a 'Limbukeni' is a person who gets into a situation/possesion in which he did not know, or have before, but since being in that situation or being in possesion of something, thinks he knows better about it more than anyone else, though actually in most cases, he/she does not know. About 'Hajikisi' I do not really know its meaning. However it is a denial of a certain situation...
