Students from all higher learning institutions will take to the streets on Saturday to protest against corruption in the government system and hiked power tariffs.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Secretary General of the Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions Organization (TAHLISO) Mtatiro Julius said they would pressure the government to reduce power tariffs which he said had become a burden to a common man.
He said it was an open secret that the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) had been forced to hike power tariffs so as to raise money for paying the briefcase electricity generating company known as Richmond Development Company LLC, and its accomplices.
Dowans, the heir to Richmond?a dubious company contracted to generate power in 2006?is collecting 152m/- per day from public coffers.
Tanesco hiked power tariffs by 40 percent in November last year for the 2008 and 2009 period, an increase which students believe was affected to enable the country`s power utility company foot Richmond`s grossly exaggerated bill.
``The government is taking a wrong track by continuing to milk its poor citizens. People must be given time to strive for better living conditions and not struggle to pay power tariffs,`` said Mtatiro.
Tanesco has also hiked its service line connection charges to new customers by 100 percent.
The management of the power utility firm has demanded a 40 per cent tariff hike, otherwise the company will fail to roll out and connect power to both its domestic and commercial customers.
Mtatiro said students wanted to shout at corrupt leaders who used public office to further their personal interests.
The amount of money that was swindled at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) would have supported a million of orphans, patients and students.
He said a total of 133bn/- that were swindled at BoT through the External Payment Accounts (EPA) by 22 companies would have been of use in other development projects.
Mtatiro said students from higher learning institutions must stand up and speak for the majority poor.
He said they couldn`t tolerate seeing the nation remain poor for the sake of a few people who signed dubious contracts.
He said students would always join hands with people who were in the frontline of the battle against graft.
The demonstrations will be staged in regions of Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Mbeya, Iringa, Dodoma, Morogoro, Dare Salaam and Unguja in Zanzibar.
He said lecturers and students from primary and secondary schools and other tertiary institutions would also take part.
``The centres as to where the demonstrations will start will be announced tomorrow. TAHLISO will on the same day give its stand on both issues,`` he said.
Kushusha abiria kwenye mizani haiko kwenye bufalo tu. Dar ekspress pia ni hivyo hivyo. Sijaelewa hapa anayedanganywa kwamba gari halijazidisha uzito ni nani! Maana askari wa usalam barabarani wanalijuwa hili, Tanroads wanalijuwa, abiria wanalijuwa. Kama linajulikana na kila mtu kwa nini watu waasiachwe waendelee na safari kuliko kushuka kupunguza uzito kwenye mizani tu wakati urefu wote wa safari uzito ni zaidi ya inavyotakiwa. Are we serious?
