DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN CAPITAL CRUCIAL-MAMA KIKWETE.

By Freddy Maro in New York

The First Lady Mama Salma Kikwete has said that human capital development was the focus of her Women and Development (WAMA) foundation, adding that, enabling individuals with the knowledge, tools, resources so that they may contribute effectively to the society’s development, was the main preoccupation of her institution.

The First Lady said this during the 5th Annual African Economic forum held at the Columbia University in New York last night where she was the guest speaker.

Mama Kikwete said that most African governments have started to underline the significance of enriching human capital that will develop and manage the abundant investments and resources within the continent.

“Today the global trend are giving us hope to the African continent especially the underprivileged children and women who I work with. As a teacher by profession, I have seen how important education is to improve opportunities for young people and boost their confidence in their ability to be self actualized,” she emphasized.

During my working visits to many parts of my country I have witnessed with great disappointment many children, particularly young girls, who did not have the chance to go to school a factor that prompted my organization WAMA to take girl child education as one of the very important initiative in our programs.

WAMA’s chairperson further said that her foundation was created to complement government’s efforts in girl child education and women empowerment.

The First Lady said last year her foundation sponsored 165 poor students to study in various secondary schools in the country and that other programs include maternal health services, adolescent sexual reproductive health and construction of model schools.

“We are implementing programs involving school based health education and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS. We are working on programs to protect children from HIV infection, particularly young girls in partnership with local and international organizations,” she said.

Mama Kikwete said has foundation was currently implementing its programs in collaboration with the US based Non Governmental Organization, Network for the improvement of the World Health and other stakeholders in Tanzania.

During the event the coordinator of the forum Lincoln Ajoku presented a special plaque to Mama Kikwete in recognition of her role as key guest speaker to this year’s African Economic Forum.

The annual Forum was organized by the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University in collaboration with the Pan African Network.

This year’s Theme for the African Economic forum was: the Different Faces of Capital: Investments for a Dynamic Africa.
The annual African Economic Forum (AEF) has grown to become the largest African-Focused event at Columbia University.
Conceived of and organized by the graduate student’s organization SIPA Pan African Network (SPAN, the AEF is a daylong event featuring several topic-specific panels and keynote speakers.

The First Lady and WAMA chairperson Mama Salma Kikwete is on a weeklong working visit to the USA aimed at meeting with various stakeholders including heads of various international organizations, institutions and individuals, in a bid to forge links and cooperation in implementing WAMA ’s various programs outlined in its five-year strategic plan.
