Mustafa Hassanali (pictured left with America actor Chris Tucker and one of Mustafa's models during the Sullivan Summit held in Arusha recently) shall launch his second Collection for the year 2008, on Friday June 20 at the Moevenpick Royal Palm, aptly named “KHANGALICIOUS” “KHANGALICIOUS” which is inspired from the natural Traditional Fabric of Khanga which is available in Vibrant Floral prints in Various Hues of Colours.

The Khanga is not only Awe Inspiring but inspirational to create Wardrobe which gives us Pride in wearing Our National Heritage. Thus, “KHANGALICIOUS” is an exuberant collection aimed at PRESERVING, Promoting and Reviving the Cultural Usage of KHANGA.

Mustafa Hassanali says “This Collection is different from the previous ones as it mainly focuses on the usage of Khanga as the basic fabric mixed with Chiffons and Bazeins to create a couture Piece!”
Whilst the preparations are going smoothly, Mustafa notes "It’s the Memories and warmth of Khanga that evokes the zeal and zest to keep our culture and Heritage Alive by creating awareness of its usage and importance not only to tourist but to Locals as well.” Charity Begins at Home.
“KHANGALICIOUS” is proudly sponsored by TIGO, REDD’S PREMIUM COLD, THE CITIZEN, IMAGING SMART, KARIBU TEXTILE MILLS and Spoilt4choices. “KHANGA” is a brightly coloured piece of cloth that many East African women wear. Many wear khanga over their skirts while working in the fields to keep the dust of their skirts. Khanga's are also worn as head wraps.

A khanga is roughly 5 feet by 3 feet which makes it perfect for wrapping it around one's self. Generally, there is a border pattern around all four sides of the khanga with a central design in the middle. There is always a proverb - usually in Swahili - at the bottom of a khanga. The words khanga is Kiswahili for guinea fowl. This came to be because khanga were originally several brightly coloured Portuguese handkerchiefs, intended for gentlemen, sown together to make a piece of cloth large enough to be worn around the body.

These cloths were called khanga because the bright colours reminded people of guinea fowl. Later on, when the khanga began to be produced, some had a guinea fowl motif which reinforced the name khanga. The khanga cloth is a very lightweight loose weave fabric.

Khanga’s have been around for 80-plus years now. In the last decade, they started to fall out of favour as younger women preferred to dress in a more westernized style however a fusion of fashion is keeping the Tradition Alive.

Thus the “KHANGALICIOUS” collection is aimed at not only to showcasing the new line but to sensitize people to buy and support Made in Tanzania thus preserving our tradition.

“KHANGALICIOUS” will also Feature a curtain raiser showcasing by Robby Morro of MAPOZI DESIGNS, one of Tanzania talented up-coming designer who specializes in Ready to wear garments made out of Khanga.

Mustafa finished by saying “Fashion industry in Tanzania is still growing, the biggest block to creativity is budget, hence we thank the sponsors for giving us a platform to unleash our creative collections.”

“KHANGALICIOUS” is proudly sponsored by TIGO, REDD’S PREMIUM COLD, THE CITIZEN, IMAGING SMART, KARIBU TEXTILE MILLS and Spoilt4choices.
