I have read Mashaka and Mdau’s articles as well as comments from contributors. I must confess that Mashaka has been writing articles which are well researched. There is a Swahili say which goes, Kafiri mpe haki yake.
I think here we need to differentiate between the China’s intent to Africa and in this case Tanzania and inferiority supremacy of our African countries as clearly put by mdau and other contributors.

I think here we need to differentiate between the China’s intent to Africa and in this case Tanzania and inferiority supremacy of our African countries as clearly put by mdau and other contributors.
Mashaka was questioning whether China’s intention to Africa is a good one or there is a hidden agenda whilst mdau proudly displays the supremacy of being exploited by super powers dated back during Karl Peters era. This makes one to think, are we suffering from inferiority disorders? Can’t we be independent? Do we like to beg too much to the extent that we need someone to think and act on our behalf? Look at Rwanda; they are planning to stop depending on donors! Such a tiny country!
Statistics proves us wrong. When China’s president jetted in, he brought with him four cooperative agreements worth 21.9 million dollars. Did we really need that? Couldn’t we fund those by ourselves? EPA thugs went away with 133 million dollars which is six times than what China brought!
We did fund the bogus radar at a cost of 40 million dollars which is twice the Chinese’s aid! So are we selling ourselves too cheap? What if in the agreements they include clause to give them rights to oversee all the contracts which Tanzania will enter with our developing partners?
As a free country we have the reasons to question the intent and integrity of the any country we’re dealing with in one way or another. China’s intent leaves a lot to be desired. China failed to condemn Sudanese government on Darfur genocide since they are siphoning oil in south Sudan.
Why shouldn’t we query that? And what people are missing here is that by condemning China for not condemning Mugabe, Kibaki or Sudanese government it meant condemning also those African countries. It is called direct proportion relationship! Again, just because Hilary Clinton did not mention human rights records during her visit to Asia then we should start writing lyrics to praise China!
The point is we’re trying to see the real intent of China. We don’t want our next generation to find themselves with nothing and nowhere to go because of our deeds which we can easily avoid. Much as we understand the importance of partnership whether it is bilateral or blocks, we must take all the precautions to avoid Karl Peters type of agreements. And how do we achieve that, is by questioning the intent of our partners .
Even if they built Urafiki, Tazara and a ground for 22 players to chase one ball is that the ticket to turn our citizens to guinea pigs by flooding our markets with fake goods? C’mon mdau. Maybe because you’re not in the country and you have no feelings for citizens of Tanzania that’s why you don’t feel a pinch when we consume sub standard commodities from China.
Think of it, our dying airline is being handed over gracefully to China investor who has never run an airline or the mushrooming number of Chinese selling ice cream and vegetables in Kariakoo! Do you call that partnership or mental slave?
As mdau has clearly put, Africa has abundant natural resources which attracts a lot of nations in the name of investors. What we need is strategic repositioning of our Countries to be able to enjoy what we’ve been blessed by our almighty for our benefit and that of our next generation.

ReplyDeleteSo what China should do with these kind of leaders such as Mugabe, Mubarak, Museveni, Gaddafi, Al Bashir and others condemn them or make deal with them. I think you are the one missing the point. Before we blem China intent we need to evaluate our self as Nation. When we go to the negotition table what is our expectation regarding aid or loan we receiving from any country. China won't make that decision in our behalf if they see window of opportunity they will take it. Before we go far we need to fix our goverment first.

ReplyDeletewhat defeats me in articles like this one are the statements like this or that article is well researched, I loath the liberal use of the word research as it does not give a true meaning of the work behind the articles. I respect the intellectual capacity of the authors however we all have to agree we write these articles based on our general knowledge and what we tend to hear day to day. And we're strongly influenced by something called bias. When it comes to issue of China-Africa trade relations there is a research team under Africa Economic Research Consortium (AERC) doing somework for sometime looking at various impacts of the china-africa trade relations. Now the output of that work is well researched papers/articles, anything else in my opinion isn't. After that remark let me give my views on what you've written in this article.

- Do not expect Chinese intentions in Africa to be anything else apart from being Chinese i.e. they have to be aligned to Chinese interests if they happen not to suit African interests, it is upon your country to say no to them. likewise interests of western countries will remain to be theirs.
- The leadership crisis is Africa is a real problem. we cant blame anyone except ourselves. For all the countries which woke up from the slumber and started making steps towards development they did so through very strong and visionary leaders. If you think there are two ways around that i'm afraid there is none.
- I think you're confusing between two issues; the amount of money we embezzle through poor/no accountability to what came in as aid. true figures of the money embezzled in the past decade is more than what you've mentioned it is close to or about 1 billion dollars is could shave a quarter of our national debt.(EPA,CIS,Radar, presidential Jet, Military procurement etc)
- There goes the statement of genocide and oil in the same line. When america is siphoning oil out of Iraq at a cost of over 700,000 Iraqi lives why dont we cry foul?. This is what force our african ancestors to give this saying of wisdom "until the lions have their historians, the stories of hunting will always glorify the hunters". let us remove bias and see it in our own eyes ..
- I will tell you why Hilary forgot to mention anything about human right records in China, they still need those trillions of dollars the chinese central bank is holding to by US treasury bills else she might miss her next pay check. I can tell you she's smart ! she's got selective amnesia at this very convenient time of credit crunch.
- the rest of the article touches the issue of leadership crisis. its not about the investments other countries should make or what resources we sell to who. It is the resolve of our leadership in implementing our own development agenda that matter. now partnership with other countries should be aligned in a manner that reinforces the realization of our own development agenda. We should stop pointing fingers outside. Sub standard goods are imported by Tanzanian traders, we have Tanzania Bureau of Standards we have TFDA we have FCC all to protect us from sub standard goods what are they doing? When the Chinese Food and Drug Authority authorised use of substandard drug their government shot dead the Director General. what have we done? But why do we want China to play politics? They have come for economic motives...that's obvious. Why do you start to divert their interests? I think the question to solve is how best to play the economic soccer with them instead of asking questions of zimbabwe and Sudan at this juncture. The chinese are strategic,let's be strategic too from the economic point of view. How best should we keep our economic interests as we interact with China? I think that is the fundamental question we should ask ourselves. Don't start talking about Zimbabwe and Sudan. They have come to us. We should not pretend to be ignorant of what is happening in the world today. USA is looking at China as potential investors as well.Mashaka how much foreign reserve does China have today?? ReplyDeleteI don't want to believe that the Chinese president backs the idea of exporting substandard goods. The same applies to us,we don't want to import fake materials from wherever. That's why we burnt them. That is a good strategy,a proactive one telling illegal dealers that we know their game,but we should not criticise their country.Some people in our system of import/export are rotten. Any strategic business person could have used that loop hole to send us any thing. Why don't they send that stuff to America? How often have the US,EU and Japan rejected some fake stuff from there outright? Have they hated the country? They still do business and prosper. This is the world of business,let's do business folks,stop nagging.
Some Tanzanians were caught dealing in illicit drugs in China,what do you say about that? Nothing!!! I think they must be held under an appropriate law enforcement organ. If some one comes in the name of investor and ends up selling bamia at kariakoo or mwenge we should also make use of an appropriate law enforcement organ. The aim here being not to retaliate, rather maintain order in our beloved country just like they equally do in theirs. There is no harm in that.
Otherwise we are arguing as if every other person in our country is as ignorant as what Mashaka wants the world over to believe. So is he seeing the bigger picture?Some of us are here at home experiencing,living and feeling it.
Guys you've got to be patriotic! It's ok to be skeptic, but don't be pessmistic. I think we should devise some useful strategies on how to deal with China from the business/economic view point. No Politics!!!
....and what? some of us are "ALUMNI" from so and so university. It is not giving you contributors any credit telling us secondary schools you went through and universities you graduated from. ReplyDeleteWhy don't they first help there own people before running to the African ountries. The fact is that they don't give a shit about us!!! We see alot of people in China who are even poor than the majority of us in Tz. So before our leaders accept any kind of aid from any country they should analyse their intention behind the aid and consider the benefits from it.
The problem is that our leaders are very selfish to the extent that they do not care about their people or the country's future. What do they care most is grubbing the funds from aid into their own poctets, yet we ordinary people gain nothing rather than getting poorer and fake commodities from China for example. What scares me most is getting fake medicines. In Nigeria there has been is a big problem of fake madicines from China. I'm afraid we are just following the same path.
If the government really care for the country and its people's wellbeing, why don't they at list ask those givers to the country in improving school, healthy sanitation systeme etc. for the benefit of ordinary Tanzanians instead of football stadion and conference centre???
One example: A Norwegian exploration company while searching for oil in Rufiji area in 2007, it instead discovered a lot of ground water enough to be supplied into Pwani and Dar Regions. The sad part of it is when they brought this good news to Kikwete, not once but many times he did not show the interest. They were willing to start the project which could improve water situation to the residents. But since our leader (JK) didn't show any effort, the Norwegian decided dropping the idea but, until today it is still being discussed why he was not interested on such important project. I also ask the same WHY????
Although as this person mantioned, Tanzania doesn't need any help for bulding schools etc. considering the money have been stolen by our leaders, but still these leaders can try to pay us back and giving us a better standard of living we are not asking much.
IT is a time to demand our right in a peaceful way. I suggest we start a signature campaign especially for water project and we send it to Kikwete maybe he thinks that we don't know about it.

China backs Sudan leader wanted for war crimes

BEIJING
China urged the International Criminal Court Thursday to drop its arrest warrant for Sudan's leader on war crimes, saying it won't help stabilize the war-scarred Darfur region.
"China opposes anything that could disrupt efforts to realize peace in Darfur and in Sudan," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in a statement posted to the ministry's official Web site.
Qin also backed a call by African and Arab countries to have the warrant dropped.
The court on Wednesday charged President Omar al-Bashir with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur - its first action against a sitting head of state
