Forum on Investing in East African Countries
To be held at Guildhall,
City of London
Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th March
On Tuesday 10th March senior political leaders from the countries of the East Africa Community (EAC) will attend a forum in the City of London to discuss the investment climate and investment opportunities in East African countries.

The conditions for investing in Africa, and in particular East Africa, are undergoing a fundamental change and the forum will give delegates the opportunity to learn more about these changes.
New governments under a younger a new generation of leaders recognise how international companies can help them achieve their development goals and are putting in place policies to encourage companies to do business. But poor perceptions (and misperceptions) continue to deter some companies from pursuing opportunities. The forum will attempt to tackle some of these perceptions and misperceptions.

The event will be divided into two segments:
The first segment will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 10 March and involve a panel discussion between senior political leaders from the EAC member states. The Presidents of Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya are expected to attend together with the President of Zanzibar (representing Tanzania) and a senior representative from Burundi. The Secretary General of the EAC is also expected to attend. This segment will be chaired by Sir Michael Snyder of the City of London Corporation.

The second segment will take place all day on Wednesday 11th March and involve a number of sectorally based discussions looking at specific investment opportunities in East Africa. The sectors to be covered are: financial and related services sector; the ICT sector; Agro-processing and manufacturing sector; energy and infrastructure; and the tourism sector.

  4. Such a short notice!!! it is not fair!!

Michuzi, try to be considerate, this is sunday and you are just giving us a short notice like this, remember we ae not in london under government guarantee, so we need to plan for the events like this....the issue is not willingness to attend and contribute if necessary! the issue is time, we live under plan, so the short notice like this saves no purpose for other stakeholders of E.A like me!!!!

I think before we attend such high profile meetings we need to ask our wabunge and our viongozi this question.

How seriously poor people in Tanzania supported?

There is the prevalent analysis that the benefits of cost-effective reorganization and programs such as Mkukuta, Mkurubita, SACCOS etc. are not pooled by the majority especially the poorest in Tanzania. This ambiguity also surrounds the trickle-down approach to unravel the dilemma of poverty and the social wellbeing nets set-up to care for it. What should be done to counter this gloom and generate a viable improvement process to benefit Tanzanian?

The best explanation to date seems to be the Asian model of economic growth, branded by labour intensive export-oriented policy and government expenditure on primary education and health services. In his work De Soto added one important factor that, in my view if taken seriously by our rules, life of poor people in Tanzania could be changed without difficulty or at low cost. What I mean is that, in Tanzania poor people own more assets than is commonly thought. But this capital is dull because its possession cannot be enthusiastically traced, legalized or traded legally. As a consequence, the poor cannot use their possessions economically or legally to secure market transactions, like securing and bargaining for a bank loan at reasonable rate of interest or undertaking the payment of services or other infrastructure services. Is this true for Tanzania? Can process of formalizing poor’s assets help to eradicate poverty in Tanzania? How can Local government help this process? Is formalizing the asset of the poor in Tanzania worth pursuing? I would like to hear your views and who in Tanzania should take a leading role?
