  7. Whitecaps claim first win in Africa

    By Simon Fudge/whitecapsfc.com

Vancouver Whitecaps FC recorded their first-ever win on the African continent following a 2-1 victory over Tanzanian Premier League outfit Simba Sports Club on Thursday afternoon.

Two goals by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines captain Marlon James helped Teitur Thordarson's side to victory in the second match of their historic preseason trip to Tanzania, with all three goals coming before halftime. Forward Haruna Moshi scored Simba's consolation goal in the friendly contest at the Tanzania National Main Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The result was a positive reply by the Blue and White following the disappointment of Monday's 3-0 defeat to Simba's arch-rivals Young Africans FC.

Thordarson made four changes to his side for Thursday's game. Brazilian Diego replaced Jay Nolly in the Whitecaps goal, while Justin Thompson and Wes Knight earned starts in the Vancouver backline. Ansu Toure took the place of Vicente Arze in midfield, while Charles Gbeke partnered James in the Whitecaps attack.

It was the 'Caps that claimed an early advantage when James scored the opening goal after just three minutes. Toure's cross from the left-hand side allowed James to neatly lob the ball over the Simba goalkeeper for 1-0.

The goal came during a bright early spell of play from the Canadian visitors, but the late afternoon heat soon started to take a physical toll on the 'Caps, with Simba eventually dominating possession during the opening 45 minutes. On the half-hour mark, Moshi made it 1-1 after striking home the equalizer for the Dar es Salaam club.

Though the first half proved to be hard work for Thordarson's squad, they would claim the winning goal just before the break. Toure's cross into the Simba box found Gbeke, who in turn, set up James to strike home his second goal of the match for a 2-1 halftime lead.

As evening descended on Dar es Salaam, the heat of the late afternoon sunshine disappeared, with the stadium covered in shade by the time both sides restarted the friendly contest. The conditions contributed to an improved Whitecaps performance after the break, as they created several more chances to seal the win.

Ten minutes into the second half, however, Simba were handed a chance to level matters again when they were awarded a penalty. Diego, however, would deny the Tanzanian side a chance to convert the spot kick, as the South American dove to his left to deflect the penalty off his own post and away to safety.

In fact, it was Vancouver that looked the more likely to score before the final whistle, with Gbeke releasing James on the break for a chance to score his third goal of the match with five minutes remaining. The Simba keeper, however, was equal to the striker's finish by making a good save to his right. The chance did not affect the final outcome, as the Whitecaps secured the one-goal victory.

Thordarson was pleased his team worked through the hot conditions to get the result on Thursday. "Though it was a tough first half for us in the heat, we scored two good goals through Marlon and had several chances to score more goals," he told whitecapsfc.com. "Simba were a very good side to play against. Like Young Africans, they had some individual qualities that caused us some concern, but I felt we deserved the victory today."

With less than a month before the USL First Division season opener versus Charleston Battery, Thordarson feels his side have progressed well since starting preseason in January. "I feel that our shape defensively and offensively is getting better," he said. "Though these games have been physically very taxing for our players, I've tried to give them plenty of playing time to help improve their match fitness. It is particularly important for our most experienced players that they play as much as possible at this stage of preseason. We still have a ways to go, but I feel things are coming together."

The Whitecaps will complete their three-match schedule in East Africa when they take on Tanzania’s national team on Saturday. Thordarson expects the weekend match to be their most challenging of the trip. "It will be a tough game for us, as the kickoff will again be in the late afternoon, when it is usually very hot here," said the former Iceland international striker. "The fact that it is their national team means it will be the toughest task of this trip for us. It will be important for us to rest and recover well over the next 48 hours before that final game."

    Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Diego; Takashi Hirano, Justin Thompson (Mason Trafford 65'), Wesley Charles (Alex Semenets 86'), Wes Knight (Luca Bellisomo 65'); Ansu Toure (Vicente Arze 53'), Martin Nash, Kenold Versailles, Tyrell Burgess (Gordon Chin 52'); Charles Gbeke, Marlon James

Whitecaps drop first match in Tanzania.

    By Simon Fudge/whitecapsfc.com

Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered a 3-0 defeat to Young Africans FC in the opening match of their historic trip to the United Republic of Tanzania on Monday afternoon.

Two goals just before halftime from Jerson Tegete helped the 2008 Tanzanian Premier League champions to the friendly win, which was played in front of more than 12,000 spectators at the Tanzania National Main Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Young Africans, who are commonly known in Tanzania as 'Yanga', sealed the win with a third goal midway through the second half from Kenya international midfielder Michael Baraza.

It proved to be a disappointing day for Teitur Thordarson's side, as the Blue and White were forced to play nearly the entire match with ten men after winger Tyrell Burgess was red carded after just two minutes of action. Though they performed well and created chances during the match, the hot conditions were a challenge for the 'Caps, who were playing their first-ever match on the African continent.

Thordarson gave Whitecaps number one Jay Nolly the start in goal versus Yanga, while the Icelandic tactician partnered Wesley Charles with Mason Trafford in the centre of the Whitecaps backline. Strikers Charles Gbeke and Marlon James earned starts up front for the Canadian visitors.

Looking to make a positive start to their set of friendlies in the East African nation, the Whitecaps found themselves down to ten men after Burgess reacted to a strong tackle from Amir Maftah just two minutes after the kickoff. The match referee deemed the Bermuda international's actions to be worthy of a red card and duly gave the young midfielder his marching orders.

Though a man down, the Whitecaps remained undeterred and created a couple of first-half opportunities through Gbeke. The Canadian international was unfortunate not to convert a cross from strike partner James at close range before the former Montreal Impact forward misfired with another strike in the Yanga box, despite being in a fine goalscoring position.

It was Yanga that broke the deadlock on 37 minutes when striker Tegete finished at the near post after a cross into the Vancouver box. Tegete then doubled Yanga's lead three minutes later with a goal of similar fashion to the first, though the Whitecaps felt aggrieved that the goal was not called back for offside.

Though they were two goals down at the break, the 'Caps kept searching for their first-ever goal of the trip, with James coming closest to scoring in the second half for Vancouver. The Yanga goalkeeper denied the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines captain from getting on the scoresheet when he stopped his goal-bound header, while the Whitecaps striker hit the woodwork with a solid strike in the game's dying stages.

Yanga sealed victory with a third goal on 65 minutes. Nolly made two saves at close range before Baraza converted the chance at the third time of asking for a 3-0 final score.

Though the result was disappointing, Thordarson felt his players benefited from their first friendly in Tanzania, as the squad continue to prepare for the 2009 season. "I'm very happy we played this game today because it was a decent contest against a very good opponent," he told whitecapsfc.com. "I would have liked us to have created more chances because we kept the ball quite well today. Yet, being a man short, we had to work hard to stay in the match and we certainly got tired towards the end. Nonetheless, there was a lot that we were able to take out of today's game."

The Whitecaps will look to rebound from Monday's defeat when they meet Yanga's arch-rivals in fellow Dar es Salaam-based outfit Simba SC on Thursday afternoon. Thordarson's side complete their three-match schedule in East Africa when they take on Tanzania’s national team on Saturday.

    Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Jay Nolly; Luca Bellisomo, Wesley Charles (Wes Knight 87'), Mason Trafford, Takashi Hirano (Justin Thompson 70'); Tyrell Burgess, Martin Nash (Gagandeep Dosanjh 82'), Kenold Versailles, Vicente Arze (Gordon Chin 75'); Charles Gbeke (Ansu Toure 70'), Marlon James

  9. HABARI YA KIWANGO CHA MPIRA WA KANADA KTK KONTINETI LOTE LA AMERIKA YA KASKAZINI,KATI NA KUSINI.

Two goals by Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Randy Edwini-Bonsu gave Canada's U-20 men's national team a valuable 2-0 victory over Mexico at the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship on Monday.

Bouncing back from Saturday's late defeat to tournament hosts Trinidad & Tobago, Edwini-Bonsu struck in the latter stages of the Group B contest to keep Canada's hopes of making the FIFA U-20 World Cup alive, while the result - coupled with Trinidad & Tobago's 0-0 draw with Costa Rica - ended Mexico's chances of reaching Egypt 2009. Canada's victory was all the more remarkable, as they scored both of their goals with ten men after midfielder Shaun Saiko was shown a red card in the second half.

Canadian U-20 head coach Tony Fonseca stuck with the same Whitecaps quartet that played on Saturday for the important clash with Mexico. The Residency duo of centre back Adam Straith and midfielder Philippe Davies earned starts on Monday, while Fonseca kept faith with the pairing of Edwini-Bonsu and Marcus Haber in attack.

With both countries needing to avoid defeat, the first half struggled to come alive as a contest at Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, Trinidad. Edwini-Bonsu and Kennedy Owusu-Ansah caused the Mexicans some concern with some dangerous forward runs, while Mexico could not take advantage of a free-kick opportunity on 29 minutes, as the Canadian wall stood firm to block their set-piece.

Canadian goalkeeper Adam Street needed to save Arnhold Rivas' low shot on 38 minutes before Edwini-Bonsu had the last chance of the half with a strike that flew wide of the target, as both sides had to settle for the 0-0 scoreline at the break.

The beginning of the second half saw Fonseca introduce another Residency player in Kyle Porter to the contest before Straith missed the chance to give Canada the lead when he struck a header over the Mexican crossbar from a corner just a few minutes after the restart.

The Canadians then ran into some trouble moments later, as captain Nana Attakora-Gyan needed to be replaced by Whitecaps defender Ethan Gage on 58 minutes after picking up an injury. A few minutes later, Fonseca's side were reduced to ten men when Saiko was sent off following a heated exchange with some Mexican players. Canada were unhappy that Mexico restarted play from a throw-in, despite Paris Nakajima-Farran being injured and on the ground after blocking a Mexican goal-bound strike.

Though the task looked a bit more daunting at this stage, the ten men of Canada - which included no less than six Whitecaps players until Haber's late substitution - surprised their North American rivals with two late goals in the final quarter hour of the match.

The winner came on 75 minutes, as Davies found Haber down the left-hand side before the Whitecaps striker played a cross into the Mexico box. The ball fell kindly for Edwini-Bonsu, who fired home his first goal at U-20 international level. "The ball dropped in front of me and I was just in the right place at the right moment," said the Whitecaps striker after the match.

Seven minutes later, the Edmonton, Alberta, native struck again when he took another Canadian cross into the Mexico box off his chest before finishing to complete the 2-0 victory. "What we showed was a lot of character," said Edwini-Bonsu of Monday's win. "To go against a world-class team like Mexico, it was something else. Nobody on our team wanted to lose, as everybody wants to go to the World Cup."

The result gives Canada a win and a defeat from their opening two matches, with Fonseca's squad needing to claim another result in their final group game against Costa Rica on Wednesday. Canada need to finish in the top two in Group B in order to qualify for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt later this year.

Sunday, meanwhile, proved bittersweet for Whitecaps striker Dever Orgill at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Though Jamaica U-20's revived their World Cup hopes with an important 2-1 victory over El Salvador in Group A, Orgill was one of two Jamaican players to be sent off in the first half at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago. The striker's red card means he will miss Jamaica's final group game versus Honduras on Tuesday, with the Caribbean nation needing a result against the Central Americans to clinch their spot at Egypt 2009.

12/03/2009 Canada's hopes of qualifying for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup came to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Costa Rica at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship on Wednesday.
