I am not a soccer pundit and as such disqualified to discuss the technical stuff when it comes to soccer details. Nonetheless, I’m (or used to be) a fan of one soccer team in Tanzania that is currently whopping some major…you know, behinds.
I wasn’t mature enough when Taifa Stars made waves in the late 1970s, but I know that subsequent teams were so horrible that the team was referred to as a “kichwa cha mwenda wazimu” by one of the ex-presidents.
I think the poor president was so disgusted he couldn’t find better terms to describe the team.I find it appalling that one of the “super” coaches during that “dark era”, Sylvester Mziray, could actually have audacity to criticize the current coach Marcio Maximo. Seriously, how could coach Mziray criticize someone who has recorded better results with the team than him?
As I said, I don’t know all the technicalities of soccer, but I know that Tanzania has made strides in soccer in the recent past. I know this also, that coach Maximo has taken the team where none of the haters like Mziray has taken the team before.
For that, coach Maximo deserves the applause.
Since I’m not an expert, I am not sure coach Maximo improved the team from a technical standpoint. I am not sure if any Tanzania can make the argument that the current players are more talented than the previous great players, such as Zamoyoni Mogella. As such, what separate the current Taifa Stars team from the previous teams must be the intangibles that Maximo brought with him.One of those intangibles, I believe, is an attitude adjustment.
I stand corrected, but Taifa Stars was historically been made up of “super stars”, players who made their names in the Simba or Yanga squads. The team was made up of players who had egos bigger than the universe. Such players relied on their talent alone, and not other “extras” that propel players from good to great.
My argument is supported by lack of many professional soccer players from Tanzania in serious leagues across the globe.Playing soccer in Dubai doesn’t count, as such is just “kuganga njaa”.
Despite the recent Taifa Stars success, it seems some players are still stuck in the old thinking mode. The details are muddy, but it is apparent that the conflict between Maximo and Haruna Moshi and Athumani Idd stems from the question of attitude. Otherwise, coach Maximo wouldn’t have called for “professionalism”.
“Professional” players play for their coach, not their egos.
I personally believe that attitude has a lot to do with our success, in whatever we do. It is for that reason I feel sorry for those kids. It is obvious they had no idea what it meant for them to participate in the CHAN tournament. They had no idea what it meant to present “brand Haruna” or “brand Athumani” for the entire globe to view.
If anything, they have blown potentially an opportunity of a life time.
I am sure every scout will inquire about the indiscipline and that would be it.I strongly believe that the question of attitude is not only confined to those two players. Another good example of such a stinky attitude is Gaudence Mwaikimba and Edwin Mukenya who once got into loggerheads with their Yanga’s coach Milutin Sredojovic.
I think we both know the outcome.
I am blessed to have lived in the Diaspora to gain some experience or two. I can testify to the fact that some of the progress or development that other countries boast of has come not from abundance of resources or superior intelligence, but by embracing the right attitude. I can also testify as to how backward attitude in some areas is killing Tanzania.
When it comes to the Tanzanian soccer, I am optimistic that we have embarked on a beautiful journey. I know that coach Maximo will depart soon when his contract ends, but I wish that we could appreciate him not for the formations he taught and goals scored, but for the attitude he brought with him.
And for all of us, maybe we can learn to adjust our own attitudes towards many things in life.

Sioni sababu ya msingi ilikupelekea kuamini kuwa Mziray hana haki ya kutoa maoni kuhusu ufundishwaji wa timu yetu ya Taifa.
Sababu uliyotoa kuwa wakati yeye alipokuwa Kocha timu haikufanya vizuri ni dhaifu sana.
Imenifanya niamini kuwa mabadiliko ya kifikra unayo yahusisha na mafanikio ya Kocha wa sasa Marcio Maximo bado hata wewe yanakutatiza.
Mziray anapenda mafanikio ya timu yetu ya Taifa na pia ana uzoefu na mazingira ya Soka la Tanzania. Sababu hizo mbili zinampa haki ya kutoa maoni wakati wowote anaopenda.
Labda nimalizie kwa kusema, lolote atakalosema Mziray au yoyote mwingine ni MAONI TU...mwenye maamuzi na Timu ya Taifa Stars kwa sasa ni Marcio Maximo.
Kwani kiswahili umesahau kwa kukaa Marekani? kuna mzungu anaweza kuja kukaa Tanzania kwa miaka kumi halafu aka address issue ya kwao kwa kiswahili?

You have definitely made a very creative and strong case not only for Maximo as a coach, but also for the recent strides evident in the team after Maximo assumed reign. Mzirai ni mfano mmoja, Juzi kuna mtu, nadhani anaitwa Mkwawa, alitoa matusi mengi dhidi ya Maximo. Tatizo kubwa la commentators wetu wengi kama Mzirai na Mkwawa, ni kwamba wanahangaika zaidi kuidentify limitations na udhaifu wa kocha, lakini hawahangaiki kuzungumzia mambo mazuri aliyoyaleta maximo kwenye timu.

ReplyDeleteA good opinion you got here. That said, let it be just that, opinion. I have a few issues though:
1. Whereas he was wrong to criticise Maximo, Mziray should not be ridiculed as well. If football excellence is judged by results, then Mziray is better off than Maximo. He won trophies with the "Kichwa cha Mwendawazimu" national team, yet our beloved Maximo hasn't won any with the "Professional" Taifa Stars.
2. As you say that the details from Abidjan are muddy, then let us not pass judgement on Chuji and Boban. We don't know what happened. For all it matters, a trend of the coach getting into disrepute with players is emerging (kaseja, hamisi come to mind, plus these ones). May be the coach has problems as well?
3. The set up of the national team is still the same - simba and yanga players are the major guys in the team. Look at the contribution of the others in there; it is still biased from both the outside and the inside. And then again, the truth, although bad, is that the best players in this country are most likely to be found in Simba and Yanga given the current setup.
The attitude you speak about isn't so hard to instil in players if the pay they get for their sweat is as assured as it is right now. I'm very sure that if these were the conditions just not so long ago (during the hussein marsha, george masatu, athuman china, kizota, edibily etc times) we would have done more than can be seen now....
Lastly, I think tanzanian football needs serious policy change. A professional league where teams not fulfilling particular requirements dont participate, grassroot competitions to bring up new young players (copa coca cola is good but where do those players go after? there is no transition), and most important to do away with the politics that reside in the football ruling body.
Then we count some tangible steps that have been made....
