Even after you see it, it is still hard to believe! Water Bridge in Germany . What a feat!
Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is engineering!
This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany , as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg , near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration.
To those who appreciate engineering projects, here's a puzzle for you armchair engineers and physicists. Did that bridge have to be designed to withstand the additional weight of ship and barge traffic, or just the weight of the water?
Answer: It only needs to be designed to withstand the weight of the water!
Why? A ship always displaces an amount of water that weighs the same as the ship, regardless of how heavily a ship may be loaded.

Duh! Hawa jamaa wanajua kuiga kweli kweli. Hiyo Architect ilikuwa yetu for the Kigamboni bridge project, sema tu tumekosa pesa za kulijenga hilo lidaraja la kuunganisha kigamboni naona sasa wameiba ramani yetu na credit yote wanachukua wagerumani. Umasikini huu!
ReplyDeleteAchimedes principle eeh?
ReplyDeletedoh, teh teh teh... ni hicho tu najua-ga hapo.
its simply the bridge was design to sustain the water,of certain weight which will be equal to the weight of ships permitted through the birdge.
ReplyDeletethe theory says, water displaces the ship is equal to the weight of the ship.
i like the engineering, germany are the best.
kweli wakati wenzetu wanakimbia marathon sisi ndo tunajaribu kutambaa, sijui lini tutafika hapo maana hata madaraja ya kuvuka waneda kwa miguu katika njia kuu ni tatizo badala yake tunaekewa matuta yanayosababisha watu wapoteze saa 2 hadi 3 barabarani, uchumi unazidi kuporomoka huku mafisadi wakiendelea kutesa, hii hatari.
ReplyDeleteaise this is good stuff....wenzetu kweli wanafikiria....
ReplyDeleteI think the weight of the ship wouldnt matter only if the bridge has over flow outlets, so that the displaced water could escape into the river below. Otherwise, your explaination does not make much sense since the total force on the bridge does not change its still weight of water + weight of ships.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, possible explaination would be, the weight of the ships is not quite significant compared to the weight of water, thus the stress exerted at any point on the bridge does not change much when you add the extra weight of the ships because as the ship pass by a given point it displaces water equal to its weight which is distributed uniformly throughout the bridge assuming the bridge is level.
There could be a better explaination I only did as far as the two physics in my freshman year.
Nawasilisha.
in bongo we can't achieve this because of majungu, ufisadi, kubebana siasa nk mf sofia simba hafai hata kwa kusingiziwa lakini ni minista wa utawalala bora how?
ReplyDeletekinyaa sana me uwa sielewi why such kind of people?kwa lipi hasa
ReplyDeleteMashalaaah nimekubali elimu mambo yote.
ReplyDeleteIna maana meli ndio zitarahisisha usafiri au kuna sababu nyingine like to reduce pollution etc...?
honesty its a good bridge but I don't see the reason to use all that money if it was just for the sake of traffic blah blah blaha.
That's is just ME
"archemedes principle states that the floating body displaces its own weight of the liquid in which it floats" nimekupa shule kidogo tu kaka michuzi ulitakiwa kueleza hivi katika picha hii....
ReplyDeleteWed Nov 11, 09:58:00 AM, Mtoa Maoni Ahmed: You completely got that wrong. This is a water bridge remember! it connects two water bodies which in this case do take the excess displaced water. In other words one would not expect the bridge to overflow even with a million ships over it at any particular time. The weight of the ship would have mattered only if the water body on the bridge was contained/restricted above the bridge. I hope you understand this rather simple explanation.
ReplyDeleteDrap
ReplyDeleteIt costed 500 millions Euros! Kuna mafisadi wana hiyo amount of money put in foreign banks bila shaka.
ReplyDeletewe ahmed nawakilisha sijui nani, acha kujifanya mjuaji mbona nenda kafanye mambo pale kigamboni tuone maujuzi yako badala ya kusifia unajidaii kuchambua pumba hapa mijitu mingine sijiui ikoje yani hata wadau watume picha nzuri namna gani kuna watu lazima wakosoe tu lazima watie neno ununda tuu kama madenge
Tusubiri China atusaidie kujenga nchi.
ReplyDeleteengineering inayokubalika...if my physics serves me right, the fact that they accounted for the water only(not the ship) assumes that the ships will always float when passing through the bridge. However, if a ship were to sink (God forbid) then it will displace an equivalent volume of water. Provided the material that makes the ship is denser than the water, and if the bridge is to stand in such an eventuality, then the bridge must be built to withstand more than just the water passing through it. Natumaini waliojenga walifikiria hili jambo kwahiyo kwamba it was built to withstand just the water passing over it itakuwa tatizo kubwa maana inamaanisha hawajaconsider suala zima la usalama wa daraja ikiwa kivuko/meli itazama....
ReplyDeleteTanzanians have no imagination. Period.
ReplyDelete...of course they have considered a number of factors ikiwemo ya meli kuzama au endapo kiwango cha maji kitazidi kiwango kinachohitajika na mambo mengine kibao ya kitaalamu
ReplyDeleteWAtu wamekaa chini wakainuka na hako kadaraja, and a fact is the bridge connects two water bodies, so it should withstand the weight of water only and the weight of a ship will be equal to the weight of water displaced, whereby the displaced water will be distributed into the water bodies connected by the bridge.
Tz tuna safari ndefu kwa kweli sio siri.
