Top fashion designer Ally Remtullah has launched a “FASHION FOR EDUCATION BENEFIT”, which is a charity event that aims at raising funds for the deteriorating situation facing Kisarawe Secondary Schools.

Ally, in association with ZAIN, has teamed up with the Kisarawe Education Development Fund to carry out a two months campaign to raise funds for the Kisarawe Secondary Schools.

The campaign will consist of media interaction, sms campaign, school concerts, door to door corporate mobilization and a gala that will involve a fusion fashion show by designers David Tlale from South Africa, Daddy De Maximo from Rwanda, Talco Bacar from Mozambique and Ally Remtullah.

Fashion for Education, an intended yearly event (for the next 10 years) aims at raising funds for different districts in Tanzania starting with Kisarawe.

Kisarawe Secondary Schools like so many others in the country is faced with vast education challenges due to lack of laboratories, insufficient classrooms, limited learning facilities and poor sanitation just to mention a few leading to very poor final exams performances.

“I believe that in order for students to understand their studies and perform well in class there has to be a conducive atmosphere and proper learning materials and facilities, when I visited Kisarawe after being invited by the District Education Fund I was moved by the current situation and got motivated to do something about it” explained Ally Remtullah at a press conference to launch the campaign.

Ally further insisted “I am appealing to my fellow Tanzanians to get inspired and join us in this fight against poverty as quality education is the pillar of national development, for it is through education that a nation obtains skilled manpower to serve in various sectors in the economy.

Prof. Bavu the chairperson for the Kisarawe Education Development Fund said “we are very pleased to partner with Ally in this project that will help alleviate some of the problems that currently face secondary schools in our District.
Our 11 schools built by the Kisarawe Community with the help of the government are in deplorable condition. None of them has a science laboratory at a time when the government calls for the teaching of science, none has dormitories needed to alleviate the plight of girls now renting in nearby private houses.
None of them has electricity; and hardly any has running water compounding the unfavorable conditions of teachers who are in very sort supply. The list is very long! We therefore appreciate Ally and Zain’s readiness to launch this noble initiative of fundraising for community schools around the country. I salute them for starting with Kisarawe.

Zain Tanzania Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Tunu Kavishe, said that partnership with Ally Remtullah on Fashion for Education is another acceleration of Zain Tanzania efforts to boost education sector in the country.

In order to donate on Fashion for Education, people from all mobile networks can send the word ELIMU to number 15620 from 1st March 2010 whereby each SMS will contribute 250 Tshs.
“We have made it even easier for our ZAP customers who will be able to donate for education from their account with minimum amount of 1000 Tshs,” added Tunu Kavishe.

Kisarawe, the Mother district as it is historically refer district is the oldest district in the historo of Tanzanian government administration. The district played a pivotal role in the fight for independence. It had two high class secondary schools before and after independence; yet today, almost fifty years after independence Kisarawe district is still one of the neediest districts in the country.

A big part of the district had gradually been chopped off and given to the growing Dar es Salaam city. More than half of what is now Ilala and Temeke districts of Dar es Salaam were in Kisarawe. Almost the whole of Kibaha and the whole of Mkuranga districts were part of Kisarawe district as well. The remaining meager resources coupled with the loss of market fees as well as the draining of schooled brains to Dar es Salaam partly explain the dismal situation of education and the community built schools in the district.

This close historical relationship between Kisarawe distct and Dar es Salaam; (and Dar es salaam being the spring board to the development of almost all the other districts in the country) justifies this decision by Ally and ZAIN through this occasion to appeal to Dar es Salaam and the whole country to come forth to contribute to the Kisarawe District Education Development Fund.
