Bai Globu ya Jamii Ripota
A fan with disability huffs and puffs his way to the Main National Stadium in Dar es salaam late Monday afternoon, his yellow jersey inscribed ‘Ronaldinho’ at the back drenched in sweat - and excitement, of couse.
The heavy traffic is more on stand-still rather than at snail's pace, as people from all walks of life, alongside with our friend on the three-wheeler, rushed to the 60,000-seater stadium South of Tanzania's business capital.
Several fans in a slow moving Toyota pick-up that has just been overtaken by the fan on three-wheels guffaw loudly while giving each other a knowing stale; that the bloke is going to be one disappointed fan when he gets to the stadium. His idol was a no show today.
They started discussing the decision by the head coach for the Brazil National team who in May released his World Cup roster for the games in South Africa, excluding Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.
Dunga had then told reporters that both players are going through some personal problems are not ready to represent Brazil in the World Cup.
Ronaldino, who plays for AC Milan has not been on the first line for a long time. Some are speculating that he is slowing down and doesn’t play as well as he could.
Ronaldo is said to be going through some personal issues that probably stem from his family. Few are yet to comprehend what happened that caused him to move his career down to the Corinthians.
But the bottom line here is that the Five-time World Champions are going to South Africa minus their traditional glitter and fan-admiration due to the absence of Ronaldinho and Ronaldo.
“Dunga is nuts” hollered one of the passengers on the pick-up. “How dare he leave out Robinho and Ronaldinho in such an event…?”
Another said he was bitter to have coughed up 80,000/- Tanzanian shillings to come and watch the game that lacked the two big Rs.
This blog could not get the chance to talk to the fan on three-wheels to get his views, but tens of those interviewed were of the opinion that Ronaldinho and Ronaldo were the biggest symbols of Brazilian soccer today that their absence was a big blow both to fans and the tournament.
Dunga left Ronaldinho and Ronaldo out of his squad for Brazil's upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifiers and the FIFA Confederations Cup, which will begin on 14 June.
Thiago Silva and Adriano also missed out on places as the Seleção coach included three players in his squad for the first time - namely goalkeeper Victor, wingback Andre Santos and midfielder Ramires - alongside first-choice players such as Julio Cesar, Juan, Lucio, Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano, and in-form forward Nilmar.
O Fenômeno, who has scored 62 goals in 97 appearances for the country he inspired to Korea/Japan 2002 glory, has excelled for Corinthians since the turn of the year, although doubts have persisted over his capacity to remain free from injury. "Ronaldo is returning from an injury. I don't even think he would feel comfortable in the national team right now," explained Dunga. "He only wants to be called up when he is ready."
The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year concurred, although he remains determined to represent Brazil at South Africa 2010.
"I'm not prepared," Ronaldo said shortly before the 23-player squad was announced. "In my opinion, this is not the right moment for me to be in the national team, especially after these last three matches in which I had some injury problems."
Form - and not fitness - was what cost Ronaldinho his place in the squad. "We've stuck to our guns and picked players who are doing well at club level," said Dunga. "We have to use common sense to do the best for Brazil. Ronaldinho is going through a difficult period. He needs to play more.
"Hopefully next season he will receive more playing time and rediscover the form that we all know he can. I'm going to do everything possible to help him recover. I have confidence in him, he's a special player. He's having a bad time but I hope he can get over this.
Michuzi, huyu ripota wako mbona anataka kudanganya watu ... squad ya Brazil haina hawa wachezaji: Alex (Chelsea), Anderson (Man U), Alex Pato (AC Milan) ... mwambie aangalie vizuri.
ReplyDeleteRealy, was it worth it? The six million dollars? Just for a game, and indeed you have been beaten as was expected, now what?
ReplyDeleteI doubt if TFF managed to return even 1/10 of the cost it incurred in organising the match (Bringing Brazil and all), from admission fee/tickets that is; the stadium was not even that full. I am definite over and above the 6M$ advanced to Brazil as consideration, TFF also catered for their travel, accomodation and the like; meaning, there were hidden costs as well.
I think Brazil just LET Taifa Stars score the one goal for goodwill sake. I doubt if the same could have been possible if the two were meeting in a real life tournament, say the World Cup.
If you ask me, the match was pointless, and I doubt if it has served any purpose.
Kamau must be clapping, wherever it is that he is. 6M$? You should have built a soccer academy instead, as suggested.
They should have put together a soccer academy instead, that is. Would have served the purpose better.
ReplyDeleteNext time you want to make money from ticket sales, bring Congolese Musicians, see how much you make - same venue same admission fees.
ReplyDeleteLearn from your mistakes. Bring Congolese Musicians.
