Dear colleague Tanzanians. As we are now approaching the end of the year 2010, there is no doubt that Tanzania will become a major investment destination. The real question is “When?” The answer to this question lies in the hands of Tanzania’s people, and in particular, Tanzania’s leaders.
A common error of logic is to pick out problem areas and hold this out as “evidence” that Tanzania is a terrible place, not worthy of being called an investment destination.
Without cautious thoughtful looking at our past, present and our road ahead, one easily misses the vast improvements in Tanzania to date.
Far more important for an investor than the absolute state of an environment is the direction of change: ‘A bad place improving’ is more often than not a better investment idea than ‘a good place slowly decaying’. Tanzania is a tough place to do business, and infrastructure is mostly poor, but this also makes the barriers to entry high and keeps the competition away.
It is no wonder that established businesses in Tanzania enjoy high margins and high returns for example on fair play. Combine that with excellent growth potential, now that Tanzania is showing high GDP growth and more importantly, high GDP per capita growth, and Tanzania becomes highly interesting in a world of budget deficits, stimulus packages and debt-burdened consumers.
What is still holding Tanzania back? Capital wants security and growth. We need more leaders that are in politics primarily to do something for their people and their country, and not because it is a ticket to personal power and wealth. We need Tanzania government to remember the core reason for governments to exist – the provision of things best achieved on a communal basis: infrastructure, services such as health and education, security and rule of law. Build the roads and ports, generate and distribute the electricity, cut the red tape, and then sit back and be astonished by the economic growth that will follow.
I wish you happy forthcoming year 2011.
God bless Tanzania

ReplyDeleteWishing you a fantabulous year 2011 as well Dr. and God keep your head up as always. The message is well put and inspiring, but for quite some time I have been failing to cite the exact reason as to why out VIONGOZI don't act for the public interest - causing people to fall poorer and poorer. Back to the late 1990s I used to fool myself thinking that it was the capacity challenge (and for me I believed it's easy to tackle, as you can plan ahead to build the capacity you need), but as years went-by I came to realize it's something much bigger and dangerous. Shayo, we have the corruption index growing unlike any other industry in Tanzania. The urge to serve the public no longer motivates the majority of leaders we put into power. They no longer assign responsibilities to people based on merits, rather on who has 'got what for me' or 'who is who to me'. I'm not trying to draw another bad picture of Tanzania to refrain DFIs or investment remittances; no, that's not the scope of my comment. The issue is, a network of these greedy leaders - that's fast-growing, laterally and vertically, keeping inflicting pain to the poor civilians, can never bring forth the desired changes for the benefit of poor Tanzanians. We've got a lot of competent people with the right calibre (inside and in the diaspora) who can deliver extraordinarily, but they're sidelined because they're not part of this treacherous network. How can we influence the desired changes with such systems in place?
"We need more leaders that are in politics primarily to do something for their people and their country, and not because it is a ticket to personal power and wealth".
Dr shayo anaona mbali. ila nampongeza kwa salamu zake hizi za kufunga mwaka, wasi wasi wangu asije katalia kurudi huko Ujerumani alikoitwa na waheshimiwa.
mtoa maoni uliyesema kuwa jamaa anajitahidi kuandika ili afikiwe ni kuwa katika dunia ya leo if you cannot market your self in this very competative world no one will do it for you.
ReplyDeleteDr shayo is marketing what he believes is good for him and for the nation of tanzania. Kwani unafikiria hao waheshimiwa hawasomi? kwani unafikiria hawamjui? kwani unafikiria hakubaliki? tatizo dr shayo ni mtoto wa mkulima na ukweli mpaka mtoto wa mkulima afikie hatua ya dr shayo siyo mchezo. he has done it na is making sure that the world know he is there.
dr shayo usiogope wewe jipigie debe mwenyewe kitaeleweka tuu. Roma haikujengwa siku moja,
ndugu peter nalitolea, acha kupotosha umma, dr shayo hakuwahi kusoma mzumbe
ReplyDeletealisoma shule zifuatazo:
kisuluni shule ya msingi na ufundi
Apostle of jesus seminary-Moshi
St Peters Seminary-Morogoro
UDSM fist degree
UDSM second degree
LSBU PhD
nk nk....
sasa unaposema alisoma mzumbe kulikoni?
nilisoma naye na ninamfahamu na kweli Mungu alimpa kajikipaji fulani ambacho ni mpaka ukae naye na uongee naye ndiyo waweza kumtambua na kumuelewa, la siyo "he always smile" as if there is no problem.
I do agree with Dr Shayo's position.
ReplyDeleteTanzania as a whole has some of the world’s greatest deposits of natural resources, and only a fraction of those resources have been tapped so far. It is not only Tanzania’s mineral resources that appear attractive but also its agricultural potential and the abundance of water that we think may decide the rise and fall of nations in the future. In addition, the country has a young and growing population, and its people could improve their education and skills to become a major asset to expanding manufacturing and mining enterprises.
Keep it up my dad. Don't be troubled by other people who hates you because you are who you are.
It is our belief that Tanzania is at a tipping point and that in the not too distant future, we will be talking about the strength of Tanzania in the same way we have talked about the Asian Tiger economies in recent years.
ReplyDeleteWhat is needed though is for newly appointed and elected leaders to work for their people and not for their families. I like Dr shayo's macro level overview. There are a very few people of his age who will be thinking this way as we end the year 2010 and approaching 2011.
it is in this context where you can measure people. Prof. Mbwete you did a good job to take dr hildebrand to be among your academic staff at the Open university of Tanzania. Look after him well, you might loose him. i know he is "hot cake" out there.
