The digital branch found at Shoppers Plaza in Mikocheni was officiated by Deputy Governor of Bank of Tanzania, Dr. Bernard Kibesse in charge of Financial Stability and Deeping. In further extending ease access to banking services, Standard Chartered Bank also launched agency banking dubbed as Standard Chartered Wakala.
The launch of the agency banking and first digital banking branch is in line with the Government’s efforts to advance financial inclusion in the country.
The digital branch is the first of its kind in Tanzania that enables customers to perform self-banking services such as depositing and withdrawing cash, making online transactions, depositing cheques and other banking services.
Dr. Bernard Kibesse, Deputy Governor of Bank of Tanzania in charge of Financial Stability and Deeping, commented, “When we talk about financial inclusion, we look at the accessibility and utilization of affordable financial products and services.
Digital banking is one of the ways facilitating ease of financial inclusion implementation. Standard Chartered Bank is the first bank to set up a digital branch in the banking industry. It is important to recognize that the digital branch offers an opportunity for banks to offer banking services in a different manner hence enhancing customer’s experience. I urge other banks to be innovative and establish digital branches to improve efficiency and offer a unique customer experience.
I also congratulate Standard Chartered Bank for launching agency banking service which will enable its customers to access banking services beyond the Bank’s branch network”. Mr. Sanjay Rughani, Chief Executive Officer at Standard Chartered Bank, commented “Digitisation remains at the heart of our business strategy. We have always been a digital bank PUBLIC and constantly work to advance our digital banking capabilities that meet our client demands and promotes the socio-economic development of Tanzania.
The launch of the first digital branch is another historic milestone for Standard Chartered Bank and the banking sector at large. Our digital branch will have a combination of technology as well as human interaction. We believe in embracing digital with a human touch.
The digital branch will offer our customers an enhanced experience while performing their banking services. The introduction of our agency banking service is designed to enhance livelihoods while providing convenient and reliable services to customers” Mr. Ajmair Riaz, Head of Consumer, Private and Business Banking at Standard Chartered Bank, commented “The digital branch will offer our customers the option to have self-banking services or get assistance from one of our staff members who will be present at the branch.
To further cement on our commitment to improve convenience, we have introduced agency banking to our customers. The launch of the agency banking is designed to further extend our footprint beyond our branch network and amplify our digital banking proposition.
We are planning to onboard 50 agents for agency banking by end of this month. We would like to extend appreciation to our partner Selcom for enabling our agency banking services”. Standard Chartered Bank will continue to review its banking propositions so as to further enhance its customer’s experience.
