The third Sneakers and Heels Exposition held on Saturday the 11th December 2021 at the Kilimanjaro Hyatt Regency hotel in Dar es salaam was a hit, with some 120-plus mid-career women working from different sectors of the economy, peace and security attending.
The event was graced by the Minister for Defence and National service Hon. MP. Dr Stergomena Tax, who was the Chief Guest.
Other panelist included the Hon Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Amb. Liberata Mulamula, Commissioner General of Immigration Dr Anna Makakala, the High Commissioner of Canada to Tanzania Amb. Pamela O'Donnel and the Ambassador of Denmark in Tanzania Hon. Mette Norgaard Spandent who shared their amazing stories on their career ladder.
There were a number of invited guests from the security forces ranging from the Police force, TPDF, Immigration, Prisons, Security companies as wqell as cyber security experts.
"This was a really good mix of participants who shared and learned issues that women face in the male dominated sectors (peace and security) and how to navigate through challenges and perform better at their roles" explained Dr Blandina Kilama, one of the exposition's coordinators and founder.
Among other things, the key takeaways of the day included
● The challenges faced by women are more informal while the positions held are formal thus have structures on how to work
● Providing on job training, by identifying skills gap that exists between male and female workers
● The country to develop programmes that will protect internet users from cyber attacks
● Determination, Dedication and Discipline coupled with confidence which is a result of competence
● Networking being a tool to connect with the world
● Having a strong support system always works
● Focus, Objective, Professionalism and working hard is very important
The last session was on the Psychological safety at work places, a session that was conducted by Mama Zuhura Muro who touched base on the importance of the subject in creating safe and inclusive working environment for both women and men.
The 3rd Sneakers and Heels Exposition was organised by the Economic Society of Tanzania (EST) in collaboration with UN Women, Lindam Group Ltd and Economic and Social Research Foundation ESRF with financial support from Legal Service Facility LSF, UN Women, KCB Bank, Optical Centre, Tanzania StartUps Association (TSA), Serengeti Breweries and PWC
