A forum on Women in Leadership and Political Life in Tanzania will be held on 8 June 2022 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The event will be hosted by the Embassy of Finland in partnership with the UONGOZI Institute.

The Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Onesphoro Gwajima (MP), will officiate the event.

Tanzania has made significant strides to ensure women lead and participate in decision-making. From electing women in high-level political positions to implementing initiatives that help advance gender equity and women empowerment within the government. Despite the progress made, there is still an under-representation of women in leadership and decision-making positions in the spheres of politics and government–the percentage of elected women leaders is 11% in the United Republic of Tanzania Parliament, 16% in the Zanzibar House of Representatives Parliament, and 7% at the local level. This calls for the need to implement strategic measures to achieve the goal of a 50/50 gender balance at all levels of elected positions.

The Women in Leadership and Political Life in Tanzania forum will address the unique leadership challenges that deter more women from occupying leadership positions. The forum will bring together experts from different sectors to engage in meaningful conversations on issues of gender equality. Unique insights and experiences will be shared by a distinguished panel that includes: Hon. Anna Makinda (Former Speaker, National Assembly of Tanzania), Mr. Amon Mpanju (Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups), Ms. Abeid Rashid (Deputy Principal Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children – Zanzibar), Ms. Monica Hangi (Country Director for Tanzania, Trade Mark East Africa), Mr. Peter Masika (Chief Executive Officer, TAYOA). The Status of Women in Leadership and Decision Making in Tanzania will be presented by UONGOZI Institute; and the Government of Finland-funded project, Wanawake Wanaweza, designed to improve participation and representation of women, youth and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as leaders in the political process in Tanzania, will be presented by the UNWomen.

The Women in Leadership and Political Life in Tanzania forum is part of this year’s Nordic Week celebrations. Nordic Week is a series of events coordinated annually to promote partnerships between Tanzania and the Nordic embassies in Tanzania–Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. Each embassy organises different activities under a chosen theme for the week. This year’s theme is The Role of Women in Society.
