ReplyDeleteJapan says Tanzania model of cooperation
2008-01-05 09:51:26
By Lydia Shekighenda
Japan has lauded Tanzania as a model of economic cooperation and priority in its diplomatic and other policy drives towards Africa.
Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura made remarks to that effect at the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam yesterday, as he began a three-day official tour of the country at the head of a 22-strong delegation.
He said Tanzania has been displaying exemplary leadership in stabilising southern Africa, in part by serving as the continents biggest provider of asylum to refugees.
Japan lauds these international efforts by the Government of Tanzania and appreciates the fact that it has been taking independent and active efforts domestically towards administrative and fiscal reform, noted the minister
He also commended the headway the government had made in the war on the HIV/Aids scourge, citing the reduction of the infection rate from 7.7 to 4.4 per cent.
He described the success as representing a milestone in the countrys fight against a pandemic believed to be the second biggest killer disease in Tanzania after malaria.
``I am pleased to see that the HIV/Aids average rate is decreasing compared to previous years, which is an indication that you are succeeding in the war,`` he said.
Koumura explained that Tanzania and Japan have for long mutually benefited from their bilateral social, political and economic cooperation.
He said his government has been extending to Tanzanias health sector technical assistance in the form of expertise, training, and provision of equipment and materials.
Wilson Mukama, Permanent Secretary in the Health and Social Welfare ministry, meanwhile said the minister and his entourage would tour various institutions and projects funded and otherwise supported by the Japanese government.
He said the Japanese governments assistance to Tanzanias health and other sectors had played a key role in improving the lives of the people and the countrys social and economic development generally.
