
Winners in both disciplines of the Rock City Marathon planned for Sunday (October 4) in Mwanza will each walk away with a cool 1m/-.
Co-ordinator of the event Philipo Simon said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the runners in both categories will each get 500,000/- while the third placed winners will be given 300,000/- each.
He said the 21 kilometre race will start at the Kirumba Stadium while the other races will start in town and end at the stadium. Other events on the day include a five-kilometre fun race, three-kilometre classic corporate race and a two-kilometre race for people with physical disabilities.
The marathon organized by Capital-Plus International Limited has been sponsored by Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL),Aquarock mineral water, Isamilo Lodge (Mwanza), National Social Security (NSSF), New Africa Hotel and 1&1 Internet Solutions Ltd.
He said that over 10,000 runners are expected to compete in the event; the biggest sporting gala in the lake Zone.
“We have got confirmations from Mwanza,Mara,Tabora,Dar eSalaam,Shinyanga,Manyara,Singida, Kilimanjaro,Arusha,Zanzibar and Kagera”,he said.
He said that runners from the neighbouring countries like Kenya,Burundi,Rwanda and Uganda have also asked to compete in the marathon.
“As the days go by, we have been receiving calls from different parts of the country and some neighbouring countries”, he said.
Simon said that the route was measured last month by an official approved by the International Amateur Athletics Associations (IAAF).We expect the race to be very entertaining.
He said that the other races will start in town and pass through many streets before heading to the stadium.
He said that runners from all over the country as well as neighbouring countries are expected to compete in the grueling event.
The theme of the marathon, according to Simon is “Promoting domestic tourism through sports”. “We see Mwanza as a potential in promoting the domestic tourism .However, these attractions have not been promoted fully”, he said.
He mentioned some of the tourism attractions as Saa Nane Island, Rubondo and the huge hanging rocks in Lake Victoria. Phillipo said that the marathon has been backed fully by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism as well as other stakeholders in the tourism sector like the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB).
He said that registration forms are available at Isamilo Lodge in Mwanza, CCM Kirumba Stadium, Capital- Plus International Limited, Athletics Tanzania (AT) headquarters in Dar es Salaam and Pizzeria Restaurant in Mwanza.
