Education and Vocational Training deputy minister Mwantumu Mahiza has expressed profound shock after she was informed that over 300 girls dropped out of school in Tanga Region last year alone due to pregnancies.
ReplyDeleteThe statistics were revealed to her at a meeting with education officers and secondary school headmasters held here on Friday.
“This number is too big …It’s sad to hear that some of my teachers are also involved in impregnating these pupils…this is a great sin …I am an activist and all these are happening in my region. It’s a big shame and I won’t accept it,” said the irked deputy minister, without going into details on actions she would take in response.
Meanwhile, Mahiza has directed the headmasters through the Tanzania Heads of Secondary Schools Association to desist from discussing own interests in meetings and instead they should concentrate on discussing on ways to raise the quality of education in the region, which is apparently going down.
According to last year’s Form Four results, a total of 4,723 candidates scored zero division in the region and those who ended up with the lowest division IV were 6,024. There was no Tanga school on the list of ten best schools in the country.
Mahiza said teachers in the region should assess themselves basing on students’ performance in national examinations and give a conclusion whether they were committed to their work.
She blamed some leaders in the education sector for putting at fore personal interests by collecting inflated fees, selling the joining instruction forms at high price and collecting contributions from parents, but in return fail to give the students quality education.
“Some of you here are still collecting school fees and selling the joining instruction forms. I have evidence on that,” Mahiza said, warning the teachers to stop the illegal business, or else disciplinary measures would be instituted against them.
