THE FALL OF THE SHILLING…..DEBATE!

The sudden drop in value of the domestic currency, Tanzanian Shilling, against major global currencies, is a matter of great concern. Currency Board – regulators- must urgently come up with a fix to contain this potential economic nightmare from become contagion; sending the domino effect into our main stream ailing economy, and perhaps plunging our country into economic chaos.

Within a span of two months, United States dollar has jumped from Tsh.1250 to a median of Tsh1400, against the Tanzanian shilling; a whopping 12% leap and seemingly sprinting towards Tsh 2,000, per one USD. This currency instability –fluctuation-is quite worrisome, not only to the domestic and foreign corporations; but to the entire economic spectrum. This trend may unravel uncontrollable inflation, and perhaps retard or suppress economic activity –growth-. This is a national concern that is sending chilling effects amongst the citizens on the direction of the nation. We can only ask ourselves on the mechanism that triggered, so abruptly, the fall of the shilling?

Purchase of foreign made industrial, agricultural equipment, and spare-parts need foreign currency –US Dollar, GB pound, Euro etc- . We need foreign currency for the importation of automobiles, purchase of medicine and other medical related equipment. Foreign currency is needed to send our children to school in India, Malaysia, UK, America etc. We even need foreign currency to import the cheap goods from Far East, and in the face of high unemployment, and stagnant wages, this sharp fall of currency, proportionally diminishes our purchasing power parity

A fall of the shilling means investments within the country will result in lower returns when converted back to the foreign currency, as such, most of foreign corporations will have no choice but to raise cost of their goods and services to meet operating cost and at the same time remain profitable. Otherwise, they may be forced to shut down their operations. Likewise, when the value of a domestic currency falls sharply, importation of essential goods and commodities proportionally decreases, resulting into a massive inflation, characterized by sky high prices of essential goods, and commodities

A few months ago, we discussed the impact of dollarization of an economy. Today we are inclined to revisit the topic, along with the nay Sayers – John Mashaka’s vehement critics-, in order to explain how our country has gotten into this ferocious economic debacle? When we have to pay for housing, air ticket, maritime, and other services in foreign currency, we end up creating an artificial excessive demand for foreign currencies. Since our country’s has a negative balance of payment, or trade imbalance; meaning we import more than we export, our foreign currency reserve is must always play in the negative territory

What the country is experiencing today is without a doubt, a beginning of an extreme inflation. I believe that, inflation will be a major event in the latter part of the year, with the consumer price index roughly doubling in the next few months. Taking into account the rate of unemployment, and stagnant wages vs. rise in cost of living, I tend to see prices of basic commodities doubling and even tripling in the next few months, should the shilling continue to lose ground against major currencies. This situation will force many importers out of business as a result of high cost of the foreign goods in relation to the revenue needed to remain operational

The abrupt dive of our currency may be poor man’s problem at the moment, but has time goes, even the societal elite will fill the pinch when some of their billions stashed domestically, turns out to be worthless. It becomes unsustainable when a loaf of bread fetches more than Tsh. 10,000, Sugar Tsh. 12,000 and so forth. Already, millions around the country are experiencing unusual economic hardship; my recent trip to Tanzania exposed me to rather, a painful encounter; I met a school teacher who could not only send her son to a secondary school, but was also unable to buy one kilogram of sugar. Similar stories are everywhere in Tanzania

Zimbabwe is a vivid example our country should learn from, and with elections nearing, we SHOULD expect both legal and ill gotten money into the circulation chasing few goods, and the little foreign currency in the country. Without enforcement of monetary policies, domestic usage of the dollar will only continue to thrive. This must be stopped at all cost, as it makes very little sense to use a foreign currency in a sovereign nation. Why should people pay rent in USD? Why should people purchase air tickets with foreign currencies?

If the wealthy within the establishment are imposing the usage of United States dollar, so that they can transfer their wealth into their foreign bank accounts, for the sake of the majority which is more than 98%, Governor Ben Ndulu, should be given more teeth to reign on commercial banks, and other financial institutions exhilarating this problem immediately, as this is one of the primary causes of the demise of the Shilling, else, we must reconcile with the emergence of new class of worthless of billionaires as the shilling continue to fall in value

On the face of the gloomy global economic outlook, we are certainly sure that, even our European and other Western backers currently battling economic blues of their own, will reduce the amount of aid to our country, which accounts for a bigger percentage of our national budget. Consequently, we should embrace ourselves for the worst case economic scenario as the foreign currency crisis will only deepen

With the prevailing economic hardship, many of the donor countries are not ready to prop-up nations with unclear economic policies. In the eyes of the world, we have failed to demonstrate fiscal conservativeness, and neither do we have visible, and attainable economic policies. In a simple language, we are corned with no way out. The only option we have is to make a u-turn from being donor dependant, to being an innovative nation, with abilities to correct our negative balance of payment. The onus is in the hands of our country leadership to adopt, and implement attainable economic policies. We must encourage domestic manufacturing; boost our exports while reducing our importation of the unnecessary goods to choke off excessive demand for the foreign currencies.

It is natural that humans respond positively by being innovative in times of need, than in times of abundance. This is the time to make good use of our natural resources; we must closely scrutinize the export our minerals to make sure the exports returns home in the form of foreign currency. We must massively advertize, and modernize our infrastructure to improve our tourism sector, expand and make less complicated our maritime services to attract businesses from land locked countries, which will in turn boost our access to foreign currencies. Amid global economic slowdown, our ministries must reduce or cut completely unnecessary foreign trips, straining and consuming millions of dollars from the treasury

In an absolute, or in worst case scenario, although these are extreme measures, we may be forced to peg our currency against the United States Dollar, British Pound and the Euro to save our economy from collapsing, or simply dollarize our economy as a measure of the last resort. This will give room for a fresh start even though will be extremely difficult for ordinary citizens, I however, have faith in Governor Ben Ndulu, should he be given the necessary tools and support he needs to curb this growing fiscal nightmare. This is my perspective let me hear yours!

John Mashaka , you have very good ideas, but the shilling will continue to fall because the big wigs controls the economy. They are the owners of the burea de changes mjini Dar. It is unfortunate that our country us nit ready for change, and will sink deeper into poverty. See small countries like Nepal is considering devaluing its currency because a decades-old peg with the Indian rupee is posing problems for its monetary policy and competitiveness, the central bank governor was quoted as saying.
Yuva Raj Khatiwada, the newly appointed governor, told the Financial Times in a report published on Monday that Nepal needed to reconsider the currency peg "in the medium term" because of the disparity between India's fast growing economy and that of its landlocked neighbour.
The peg holds the exchange rate at 1.6 Nepali rupees per one Indian rupee.
"We have been overly stressed to maintain the peg," Khatiwada said, noting that India's economy was growing at twice the rate of Nepal's economy.
The governor said that India's rupee was appreciating because of the country's economic strength and capital flows.

  9. Most of the time, people believe that country’s wealth lies on natural resources. This has proven not to be the case. The reason being that, you can have so much yet don’t know what to do with it, and other people ending up benefiting more than the country itself. And that is the case of Barrick Gold, and others looting our nation

This is the case in Tanzania today. Many our riches (wealth) is being enjoyed by foreigners, and a few in the government (FISADI’S -in the ruling CCM). This is happening because we don’t have true wealth. We have poor brains.

John Mashaka, has proven to be a such a valuable ASSET, or other few of the brains we need to claim full riches. I am baffled by this Youngman’s genius mind, no wonder he was tapped to Wall-Street. He has instigated thinking among the Diaspora and has been lightning rod of envy.

I must admit, that this is a well written article, well thought, and timely delivered. These are very challenging times, which needed brains to counter the challenges. John Mashaka’s Ideas and thoughtfulness is superb; he has erased all the doubts we had about him, if at all he wrote the article

Mashaka, tumekusikia vizuri ujumbe umefika, I hope the governor, Hon: Mustafa Mkullo and the rest heard you too.

Bisha shaka ninakuwa mwanafunzi wako

Mr. President, His Holiness Yohana Mashaka, this is a well written piece as usual, but seemingly you have learn so much in America, and forgot that these theories are not applicable in a country like Tanzania. Tanzanian leadership sill thinks in terms of 1947 yet we are in the 21st century.
We expect the savvy of our generation like you to assume leadership and change the entire scope of our economic vision. The Tanzania will continue to lose its value, until it collapse and the current regime has no intent of changing things for the beeter

John Mashaka, msiogope, Rudini nyumbani muitumikie taifa lenu.

I AM SKEPTICAL WITH THE actual existence of this character the author, called John Mashaka. He is never opposed in the public, Michuzi isa lways glorifying him I am always fascinated with his unusual way of thinking. He has a very glossy means of presenting hia ideas to the right audience. Some times what you write seems to good to be true, and that makes me skeptical whether you are the true author of your articles. However, your assessment is mostly applicable in the US and Europe. Tanzania is not in the level or scale of your thinking, tone down your rhetoric, because even though you have convincing power and very valid arguments, it is unfortunate that you are pushing wrong agendas to wrong people. People like Zitto Kabwe are double dealers; they are trying to get what they can from Mining companies and at the same time trying to secure their votes with electorates by throwing any idea into the public. I second your article, it is well written and well researched, hope those in power do read them

Mashaka kudos, my friend, but For a currency to be devalued means that the issuing government has mandated that the price of the currency (in foreign dollars) is lower than it was before. For example: if the Russian government changes the exchange rate from 100 rubles = $1 to 150 rubles = $1, then the ruble has been devalued. Now, regardless of whether a country has a fixed or flexible exchange rate system, there exists a "true" (we say "equilibrium") exchange rate. The equilibrium exchange rate is the exchange rate at which everyone who wants to sell the currency can find a buyer and everyone who wants to buy the currency can find a seller. By definition, a flexible exchange rate is the equilibrium exchange rate. This is not the case with a fixed exchange rate. Consider the following analogy. The equilibrium price of a car is $10,000. If the government imposes no restrictions on car prices (i.e. car prices are flexible), then the free market price of a car will be $10,000. Further, there will be no surplus or shortage of cars -- everyone who wants to buy a car (at $10,000) will find one to buy, and everyone who wants to sell a car (at $10,000) will find a customer. Now, suppose the government imposes a price floor on cars of $15,000. At the official price of $15,000, many people will want to sell cars, but few people will want to buy cars – there will be a surplus of cars. If the government wants to avoid ending up hip-deep in unsold cars, it will have to buy the extras itself. (Note: this is precisely what the government does in the case of farm subsidies.) In the case of a fixed exchange rate, the Russian government declares that the official price of 100 rubles is $1. Suppose, however, that the equilibrium price of 100 rubles is $0.75. That is, people would be willing to trade 100 rubles for $1, but the government only allows trades of 100 rubles for $0.75. At the official price of 100 rubles to $0.75, many people will want to sell rubles (sellers receive $0.25 more than the equilibrium price), but few will want to buy rubles (buyers must pay $0.25 more than the equilibrium price). The result is that there will be a surplus of rubles: there are more people willing to sell than there are people willing to buy. As in the car example, if the government wants the market to continue, it must take up the slack. In this case, the Russian government must buy the surplus rubles (at the official price of 100 rubles to $1). How does the Russian government buy rubles? It pays for the rubles on the market with, for example, US dollars. So now everything is fine. The official exchange rate is 100 rubles to $1. The Russian government buys up the surplus rubles that the market does not want, and life goes on. Not so fast. The Russian government is buying these surplus rubles with US dollars. The US dollars are coming out of a stockpile that the Russian central bank has built up. What happens when the Russian central bank starts to run out of dollars? When the Russian central bank starts to run out of dollars, it becomes harder for it to buy up the surplus rubles. If the central bank loses the ability to buy up surplus rubles, then it becomes powerless to enforce its fixed exchange rate. The Russian government now has three options: (1) revert to a flexible exchange rate (which would cause the price of rubles to immediately fall to 100 rubles to $0.75), or (2) suspend trading in rubles (which is what the government did first), or (3) devalue the ruble so that the fixed exchange rate is closer to the equilibrium exchange rate (which is what the government did next). Note that option 3 does not solve the problem, but it does buy some time, while option 2 results in the formation of black markets in which the price of the ruble will fall more than it would were the government to revert to a flexible exchange rate.

I don’t know English, and saw this good comment, I post here from jua kali. The biggest problem facing our country is the way people incorporate ‘waste’ in our systems and banking system has got no exception. ‘Waste’ has been a ‘norm’ in banking system just like in our hospitals, manufacturing units etc. People are happy with it [waste] and some are making their 'ends meet' by using it, as it encourages corruption- It’s really strange in today's world of stiff business competition!

By saying ‘waste’, I don’t mean a pile of rubbish you see when you enter one of these offices. While a pile of rubbish can cause ‘waste’ in a process by making other processes delay but it’s far more than that if I'm perfectly honest.

Let me first define what waste means before creating more misunderstanding and mayhem on the subject matter.

‘Waste’ is anything is production or process that doesn’t add value to the intended['main'] task. Say in a theatre room in hospital; we know for sure the main task there is to perform an operation to a patient, so if it takes 10 minutes to find where scissors are or where gloves are, then the whole process of doing operation would be delayed for 10 minutes. The process of finding scissors/gloves entails ‘waste’ here as there is no value added in our main task; operation, instead, the process of finding scissors/gloves takes time in our main task. Assume the same is happening in 100 operations, then the hospital would loose about 50 minutes doing this non-value added task of looking for scissors etc.

There are lots of processes within many banks that don’t add any value to their core activities and this could be one of the reasons we have such long queues. There are several ways to tackle the issue. While I can acknowledge there is no ‘one size fits all solution’ but I think this could pave a way to the solution of the problem; it’s for the banks concerned to look at their processes and evaluate them accordingly time after time. This could help them know where problems lie and implement, apart from other solutions, a waste-cutting/leaner solution.

While they [banks] know what sort of times these long queues emerge; it’s up to them to add extra staff during these times. I’m sure some customers wouldn’t have problems/issues that need to be solved in counter, so this sort of things can be dealt by extra personnel outside the counter.

I don’t know if our banks use drop box facilities! If they aren’t, I think it’s time for them to start thinking about using these boxes. Having these facilities in the bank would enable banks to cut number of customers on the queues as some customers wouldn’t like to spend the whole of the day on the queue for the sake of depositing ‘few shillings’ in someone's account. But it should be noted that robust procedures and mechanism to curb down any anticipated ‘dodge’ activities from untrustworthy customers or employees are to be put in place.

Of course, we can’t ignore the power of technology here! Who denies the power of technology when used wisely and effectively? What about having 'reliable' internet banking? I understand our level of internet technology could be a stumbling block, both in security [level] and availability of internet to some customers. But internet banking has been observed to be a panacea for long queues associated with brick-and-mortar banks. Banks and other stakeholders in financial sector should invest heavily on these technologies to ease overwhelmed brick-and-mortar banks when it comes to the bill payments, cash transfers etc.

For today, that’s what I had to say.

Whatever prophet mashaka is talking about is not anything new people want to hear. Tanzanians are talking of USIFADI mashaka is talking about the shilling. This does not make sense at all, he is out of touch with the reality. We are tired of his articles.
I have been working with Comrade Mugabe for the past six months, and all of you can agree that Zimbabwe is growing due to my good work. Mashaka, is another Madoff of Tanznaia, and would not bet my dime on him to be a savior of Tanzania
He is an opportunity who wants to rule Tanzania through the back door. We have to get mashaka to come and work with me or debate me. I am tired of hearing of women praising him every day
I am ready to pay him and his antourage to come and debate me in Tanzania, with TIDO Mhando moderating the debate. I wan to show Mashaka, that he is still a little kid who need to learn mpre from OXFORD alumni
I am willing to pay Nabii John Mashaka USD $ 1,000,000 (1 million) to come and participate in a roundtable discussion in Tanznaia. I am also going to let him fly first class to TZ, and stay at Kempinsiki at my own expense.
John Mashaka is very broke with $5.75 n hour cannot sustain him, he must therfr accept my offer so that he can get out of poverty he is currently in. I graduated with first class honors from OXFORD and half cooked interlecatuals from the US cannot worry me. I am more smarter than john Mashaka I swear on that

As usual Mashaka have spoken with a lot of gusto and machismo but you have spoken from your heart. He has exposed hir brilliance and rhetoric by being indirect on various.

His mastery of English language has given him a competitive edge against his fellow –semi literate-tanzanians who lacks the the ability even for the less needed messenger jobs in Kenya. Most of them in Eurpore are simply drug dealers, and factory workers

I am sure Mashaka did not learn his masteryo f issues from Tanzania, UDSM or elsewhere. His interelectual foundation emanated from his early years in Kenya.Your years of schooling in Kenya before coming to the US for higher education and career development appear to have left an ambivalent mark on you.

I lived with Tanzanians in the UK, and they are some of the funniest human beings –creatures- I have ever seen. Gossipers, party animals, and the laziest to have ever inhabited plannet earth; When I read well thought and well composed Ideas such as Mashaka’s, I remember two famed Kenya Ministers, Robert Ouko and Tom Mboya who happens to be from the Same Tribe Luo, Obama’s ancenstrial tribe.

John Mashaka is not a Tanzanian, because very few of them think like him, they have very low self esteem, incompetent and dumbest people I have ever come across, just like Julius K. Nyerere was a Rwandese (Tutsi) John Mashaka is a Luo from Kenya where Obama, Tom Mboya and Robert came from. This places Kenya on top of the world in terms of most brilliant people besides Nigeria Ibo’s in the entire African continent.

Do not therefore celebrate this young man as your own; rather thank Kenyan’s for training and eventually exporting world class thinkers of Mashaka’s caliber.

PS: John Mashaka, this issue aside, and congratulation for the great work you are doing. You are truly an African son of the soil. We as the land where you received your education are proud of you as we are proud of our existential son, Barrack. Hussein. Obama who is now the president of the United States of America

We must admit that most of his writings are current and uptodate. nadhani inabidi tuachane na mambo ya wivu ili tuendelee na kuchangia mema kwa wenzetu, tanzania tutafika lini. jon mashaka is one of the few young men our country has to be proud of. he is a thinker, he is a trategist he knows what to write and when to writeto be honestis thinking in terms of 50 years ahead for Tanzania, Fisadis’ are thinking how to loot their ministry’s. These are the caliber of Kwame Nkrumah, Wole Soyinka, Julius Nyerere, Nelson Mandela who devoted their lives for their people. This youngman has a very brilliant future and we must support him. mzee wa vijisenti is thinking madili zake huko UK, and mashaka is thinking of dangers of fall of our currency.
It is time we give this breed of Mashaka a chance to lead this nation. We need these young people to come forth and demand change. The voters, we are ready to give them the benefit of doubt as long as we can leave ufisadi behind us. It makes me wonder how someone can post a bind of 3. Billion yet was working for less than a million in salary a year. Only in Tanzania, where the powerful rule and the poor sink in poverty. Mashaka has written extensively on the fate of this nation, but seemingly his brilliantly crafted articles enters in dead hears. All he spoke about economic are coming true, we are losing jobs in this land, our tourism is deteriorating, but the government has never come forward to tell the people how the problems is going to be solved or what plans they have in place.
A country’s success depends on her people’s ability to fight for their own. This new breed of leadership is the alternative we need to close the widening gap between the haves and have notes in our country. Mashaka’s maturity to lead is clear because he is stern and bold in his decisions, yet humble and modest on the other hand. Young man we love and treasure YOU., just come back and join dr slaa, Mtikila and other patriots who are dying for their country. I am crediting you for your brilliance and articulate abilities. You can initiate, build and defend ideas. This is what we are lacking in our country. We have people who spend much of their time thinking how to loot the public wealth yet majority in the country dying with poverty. I was shocked when I came to Tanzania and visited Wizara ya Mambo ya Ndani, wakina dada wanaofanya kazi pale, I don’t know whether they are lawyers or what not, they don’t deserve to be there because they don’t know what they are doing but trying to show off their stupidity.. That is why we are so poor and have no hope of ridding ourselves of poverty, even the Chinese to us looks like Gods. We must wake up now we have people like you and Dr. Shayo. Please come back home, don’t let the Wall-Street money corrupt you and forget your country that raised you. The Americans love you because they know what you are worth. Tanzanians must now embrace you young man, you are incredible and a thinker of another caliber in another planet

In my view I think there is a very big problem of good leadership in Tanzania government system at the moment. Leaders are not working on big issues like economy rather they are just busy scoring cheap political points by focusing too much on very simple issues.

If country economy is not well managed by having sound monetary policy in place, life will be difficult to everybody.

Thank you John for this article. However, I would like to correct/add a comment on point of foreign investors closing there businesses and move away. This will not be the case for all investors. Specifically, investors; who are exploiting raw materials; such as mining, agricultural products and other natural resources which are of course main exports for Tanzania, are very happy at the moment. This is because they can now get more shillings by selling few amount of dollars and at the end make huge profit.

    Solution:

    1. Stop agitating FDI by passing laws like teh recent Telecommunications Law and the Mining Law. When Investors get agitated the flow of Forex is AWAY from your country

    2. Development Partners witholding 200BUSD in GBS must also have contributed too. To this I say, "IT IS ABAOUT TIME WE STOP DEPENDING ON DONORS BY SPENDING WHAT WE HAVE".

Hivi ati muda wote wakuandika hizi essays unapata wapi??????

    Jamani weee,

Personally i think if you have got great ideas, it will be best if you speak directly to people who are running the country's economy. I'm talking about, Finance minister and other people who are directly involved in the finance sector.

It will be absolutely pointless to come up with great ideas and not put them into practise. They will remain as a dream and then one day you will come up to regret that, you know what, had i known, i should have contacted the people who are really involved with all the matters of economy. Now it is too too late.

I'm sure that, TZ has got people with full of great ideas but we, end up being writers like shakespeare. At least shakespeare is remembered for the great work he did and when you mention his name everbody known.

For us walala hoi, wala vumbi, trust me whether you like it or not we will continue kula vumbi if we keep on being writers. There is a lot of talking, word of mouth and there is no delivery.

    Ni hayo tu michuzi.

pili, thamani ya fedha ya tanzania ikilinganishwa na Euro imepanda so kutumia against major currencies itakuwa sio sahihi.

It is very concerning to see our currency drop so sharply, but it was a situation in the making for a while now

    1) The use of foreign currency in our domestic economy should be discouraged as it builds up demand for foreign currency and ignores our own.
(If there is no demand for the Tshs even in Tanzania, where will it be demanded??)
All major businesses within the country conduct operations in USD, for instance Hotels, Airlines, etc. This should be discouraged and if possible banned. Domestic institutions don't need to use foreign currency for domestic operations!!

    2) Import taxes should be increased to discourage importation. Especially for products which can be locally produced. If sale of domestic products increases even internally it will give growth opportunity for local industries to produce better quality products.
(After all if products are not demanded locally where will they be demanded?)

3.Local industries should be given some forms of tax relief to encourage domestic production.

    4. Policies need to be put in place to regulate prices, as it was done during the fuel price crisis about 2 years ago, except the gov't should enforce these policies and ensure local industries don't take advantage and sell products at ridiculous prices as this will take us back to the initial situation.

(Local spending needs to be stimulated, and this needs to be done in the manner of buying local goods with local currency, but it can only be encouraged if there is affordability.)

5)Exports of local products need to be encouraged even if it means reducing taxes but also bear in mind that while export increases industries often neglect domestic market, this needs to be monitored to ensure there is fair export as well as domestic market.

Usage of local currencies needs to be greatly emphasized in all sectors of the economy especially tourism which is one of our major economy boosters! tourists need to pay in Tshs when visiting the country and stop spending in dollars in order to create demand for local currency.

Its high time the gov't should intervene and place necessary procedures to reverse this decline and save our national currency. The Tshs is a symbol of our sovereignty, there wouldn't be much of a gov't without it!!!

    From a Patriotic Tanzanian

Uchumi wa nchi nyingine umeanguka as due to the recession but as major economies are pulling out of the recession so are their currencies, the GBP was 2140 when it was doing better, just a few months ago, now at its worst due to the (just ended) elections its 2195 compared to the tshs, i would imagine it shouldve been at 2120 or even 2100 flat to the shs....

Ni kweli USD inapanda thamani kwa kasi due to the speedy recovery of the US economy but hata when we check against the euro and other currencies, thamani ya tshs imeanguka

Forget about Mashaka John or Dr. Shayo, but here is what touching us. It is simple US$1 vs Tshs.1495, this is what Mashaka hits at. Do you think it is fair or you just don't care? I know most of us we have managed to visit Michuzi blog because we have surplus in our pocket that makes us not even feeling the hidden costs of visiting this blog, so free fall of our shilling does not bother us. I agree with Mashaka, that something should be done immediately to rescue us from this bad omen to our economy. This dollar/shilling exchange will start to be seen when the oil price spurt, next it will be bus fares, commodities and other basic needs, then it will be strikes and conflicts in various work places. The next thing will be decrease in commodities and from here you all know what next!.People are forgetting that we are doing most of our import/export trade using US dollar compared to other currencies. So if shilling fall against US$, then our economy has to respond accordingly.
So i think the only cure is you Tanzanians, with kitambulisho chako cha kupigia kura, we can get rid of this free fall of our economy, because those, who we thought they could lead us to maisha bora kwa kila Mtanzania are now good worshipers of Ufisadi na umimi. We need to try another breed, these ones can't dance in our rhythm. That is it.

U have a Fair point JP Morgan, i second ur opinion, however a weak foreign exchange is not completely dissociated from a country's economical status. A weak currency can be damaging to an economy if they don't regulate enough exports, that is to say if there isn't a high enough demand for exports from that particular country. China is just one of the few successful examples. It is true the dollar has been getting stronger, but what is the excuse for other countries such as Great Britain which have been falling against the dollar in terms of foreign exchange rate to a low 1.45 figure as compared to 1.6 during the last quater of 2009 yet have been rising against the Tshs?? to 2195Tshs as compared to the 2130Tshs earlier this year? (putting into consideration this is an economy that hasn't been doing too well earlier this year due to dwindling investments amid fears of government change)

As a moderator I will like to pick key messages for informing policy but am afraid most of the discussions are in a vicious cycle of sharing experiences and importance of inclusion certain group or sector without linking to the national policy on ageing. I encourage members to go further breaking the vicious cycle by providing policy recommendation statements and how to implement it. Policy makers are convinced if they are provided with scenarios of policy recommendation.Having saying that there are really good points raised regarding inclusion of informal sector in pension schemes. The contribution of this sector to employment is nearly 75% of the active population. Most of their activities are outside the tax system and tend to be mobile including some of their assets. How can they be administered for a sustainable social security scheme? What policy prescription can be written to policy makers? can someone provide a best practice from elsewhere?
I also found a point about gender consideration where a pension scheme for women was suggested. This is real an interesting point due to the contribution of the women in economic development. About 60% of agriculture labors are women and they perform 90% of all farm works yet majorities are poor. When they reach at old age they become even more vulnerable and insecure. Now how can pension scheme be designed to capture these hard working women? What policy prescription can be advanced to policy makers? Is there any best practice from elsewhere?I have also noted the discussion do not feature in strategic interventions in pension industry. Previously I asked your opinion regarding the recommendation given to the government from IFM to establish a regulatory board to oversee operations of pension schemes in the country. I have some policy provoking questions that I would like your opinions and possibly policy prescriptions. According to Integrated Labor Survey Report 66% of urban population work in informal sector and 84% of rural population primary activities are in informal sector. Despite there is small segment of population working in the formal sector, why there are many pension schemes? And how do this pension institutions manage to survive and invest? It should be known that pension schemes take percentage of their member’s salary. This means some percentage of the money circulation within the economy is retained. And if re-invested it results into delay payments to beneficiaries until investment yield profit. The question is how should this pension schemes be regulated to avoid interference with money circulation and delayed payments to beneficiaries? I will appreciate if I will be able to receive examples in other countries indicating the number of pension schemes operating in comparison to economic indicators such as number of people employed in formal sector, rate of economic growth, employement by sector, etc (as you see relevant). This is important for recommending issues that can be regulated by the pension scheme board envisaged to be established. This will help us to make strategic recommendations to the pension scheme industry in the country.

There are many models to explain this phenomenal of currency crisis and some make sense and some don't make sense. Find out what you like and take it or leave it. If there is no sufficient evidence to prove the model is robust for explaining the crisis, then reject the model. Others things are garbage, I strongly urge readers to beware, there are a lot of people who don't know what they are talking about. They may claim that they know while they don't really know shit. Don't argue with a fool, you'll be a fool too!! Don't let others throw their garbage to you. I'm spitting cuz I'm sick of this nonsense about fake experts.

After all has been said and done, my fellow TZ citizens, remember that our currency is PEGGED TO THE US DOLLAR!!! That is the naked truth. As European other countries' economies struggle with their debts, the US Dollar will get stronger hence becoming a safe haven for investors. And as such people will demand to buy the US Dollar to minimize the risk that our currency carries. Also all the foreigners keep or repatriate their earnings outside our borders.
