Mheshimiwa Michuzi
Huu mjadala umekuwa ukijirudia sana kila mahali, miongoni mwa viongozi serikalini, mashuleni, kwenye vyombo vya habari, maofisini na kila mahali. Hii ni kwa sababu msimamo na mitazamo ya watu imetofautiana, na zaidi sana serikali ina kigugumizi. Nafikiri miezi miwili iliyopita waziri George Mkuchika alitoa tamko juu ya matumizi ya lugha ya Kiswahili, kwamba ndiyo lugha rasmi ya taifa na itumike ipasavyo.Sasa ndani ya wiki hii yamekuja matamko mawili toka kwa mawaziri wa elimu, Prof Maghembe na mama Gaudensia Kabaka, ambao wamekemea ufundishwaji hafifu na dhaifu wa 'ki-english' jambo ambalo linapelekea wanafunzi wengi kufeli mitihani yao na watanzania kushindwa kutoa ushindani katika dunia hii ya utandawazi inapokuja kwenye suala ya kushindania ajira na biashara kwa sababu ya kutomudu 'ki-english'.
Sasa je, huku si kuchanganya wananchi? Tuzingatie lugha ipi, mbona wadau wengine wanataka kiingereza kisitumike tena mashuleni la vyuoni kama 'medium of instruction' kwa sababu inasababisha wanafunzi wasielewe masomo!? Serikali inasema nini juu ya hili, wataalamu wa english wanajua kwamba kama Tanzania tunataka ku-master lugha hii, lazima matumizi yake yaongezeke zaidi kuliko hivi sasa. Iwe medium of instruction sio tu sekondali na vyuoni, bali kuanzia madarasa ya awali. Na pia inahitajika mazoezi makubwa ya kuongea, mashuleni, mitaani, maofisini na majumbani.
Hivi mashindano ya Zain Africa Challenge hayatutii aibu? Kushindwa kwa vyuo vyetu kwani ni kwa sababu wanafunzi wetu hawajui au hawana kiwango ukilinganisha na vyuo vya Kenya, Uganda na West Africa ambavyo siku zote hufika mbali? Jibu ni lugha tu! Sasa Tanzania tutashindana vipi katika ulimwengu huu wa utandawazi kama tutaendelea kutokuwa na msimamo wa kitaifa juu ya lugha na kuacha wananchi wetu waadhirike na kukosa fursa kwa kuongea kiingereza kibovu? Kiswahili kweli ni lugha yetu ya taifa tunaipenda lakini itatufikisha wapi? Leo ukitaka kufanya biashara na mchina na m-nigeria na mu-afghanistani mtaelewana kweli kama lugha haipandi? Haya Rwanda wamefungua mipaka ya soko la ajira, na nchi zingine zitafuata yumkini na Tanzania, hamna vibali kwa wageni wanaoomba kazi huko toka nchi za Afrika Mashariki, je, tutasimama na kushinda usaili tutakapopambanishwa na wakenya na waganda ndani ya nchi yetu au nje?
Mama mmoja wa kizungu sikumbuki jina lake ametoa matokeo ya utafiti aliofanya ambao aliwahoji wawekezaji juu ya ushindani wa wa-tanzania katika ajira zitokanazo na uwekezaji. Matokeo ni kwamba waajiri wengi wanalalamika juu ya uwezo mdogo wa kuongea na kuandika kwa kiingereza kwa watanzania na hilo ni tatizo kubwa sana kwao kwa sababu wanalazimishwa/wanalazimika kuajiri watanzania. Subiri tufungue mipaka ya ajira kama Rwanda uone yes..no..yes zetu zitakavyotutupa mitaani!

ReplyDeleteHakuna mtu atakudharau kwa kutokuongea lugha ya kigeni. Mtu atakudharau kwa kutokuongea lugha yako ya asili. Haya mambo ya kudharauliana kwa kutokuongea Kiingerza ni ya Kiswahili. Kwa vile tulitawaliwa na waingireza basi kila kitu cha Mwingireza kimekuwa kizuri. Ndo maana kuongea Kiingereza tumekuambatanisha na usomi, huku ombaomba wa Uingereza wakiongea Kiingereza japo hawajapata kuingia darasani.
ReplyDeleteKama unaona tatizo ni uchumi, basi tukazanie uchumi. Tufanye kazi kwa bidii tuwe na uchumi kama wa Kijerumani, kifaransa, Kijapan nk na tutumie lugha yetu. Lakini hata huko Ujerumani, Ufaransa, Japan nk ni lugha ndio ilianza si uchumi. Uchumi haukuanza halafu ikafuata lugha. Kwa hiyo na sisi tunaweza kuanza na Kiswahili halafu uchumi ukafuata. Kinachotakiwa hapa ni bidii ya kazi, kujituma, kuondoa rushwa na uongozi bora.
Zaidi ya yote, kukazania lugha zaidi ya 1 ni jambo linalowezekana. Kwa hiyo si kwamba Magembe anapingana na Mkuchika. Hata Wamarekani sasa wanakazana kuongeza Kihispania. Usiniambie kuwa ukiongea Kiswahili utashindwa kuongea Kiingereza au ukiongea Kiingereza utashindwa kuongea Kiswahili. Ubongo wa binadamu una uwezo mkubwa sana. Kuongea lugha 2, 3, 4... inawezekana. Kinachotakiwa ni kuanza kuzifundisha katika umri mdogo. Kwa wale waliozaliwa vijijini wanajua ninachokisema. Unapozaliwa unaongea lugha ya kabila lako. Ukianza shule hujua Kiswahili - ndio kwanza unaanza kujifunza Kiswahili. Mwishoe unaongea zote mbili - ya kabila na Kiswahili - kwa kiwango cha kuzaliwa. Kiingereza nacho kianzie katika umri huo. Tatizo ni kuwa hatuna watumiaji wa kiingereza ambao watoto wadogo wanaweza kujifunza toka kwao. Kwa kuanzia serikali inabidi iajiri walimu wa kigeni kufundisha chekechea.

Kwanza nianze kwa kutoa pongezi kwa mtoa mada kwani suala la kutambua lugha gani tunaipa kipaumbele ni la muhimu sana.
ReplyDeleteNaungana na wote wanaopenda lugha ya Kiswahili ikuzwe na itumike katika mawasiliano yote katika nchi hii na pengine na hata tuendapo nje ya nchi.
Hata hivyo ninaamini pia kua tunahitaji kufahamu lugha nyingine za kimataifa kwa ufasaha kwani zina nafasi yake. Tuache kujilinganisha na mataifa yenye lugha zao kama Ujerumani, China na mengineyo. Kama tunataka kua kama wao, yatupasa kujitegemea kwanza katika uchumi then suala la lugha linakuja tu. Mfano, leo hii US wanapaswa kujifunza kichina kwa sababu uhusiano wa kiuchumi wa nchi hizo mbili unawalazimisha. Tutake tusitake, Kiingereza sasa ni lugha ya mawasiliano dunia nzima. Ujerumani yenyewe sasa iko katika majadiliano kukifanya kiingereza lugha rasmi ya mawasiliano ukitilia maanani imekubali kujiunga na mfumo mpya wa elimu wa nchi za Umoja wa Ulaya.
Katika dunia ya leo ambapo inaaminika dunia ni sawa na kijiji, kushikilia kiswahili tu bila mifumo mizuri ya kiuchumi ni kujirudisha nyuma kimaendeleo. Mmoja wa machansela wa Ujerumani aliwahi sema kua "kama mimi nanunua kutoka kwako, unahitaji kuongea lugha yangu, lakini kama nitakua nahitaji kukuuzia kitu, nitapaswa kuzungumza lugha yako".

In this special section, Eisuke Sakakibara, who was known as "Mr. Yen" when serving at the Finance Ministry as vice finance minister for international affairs, and Aoyama Gakuin University Prof. Mitsue Allen-Tamai examine the problems in English education in Japan.
The Daily Yomiuri: What is your opinion of Japan's level of English proficiency compared with our neighbors South Korea and China?
Eisuke Sakakibara: The English skills of other kanji-using countries are developing dramatically. However, a similar development has not been seen in Japan. Unfortunately, our English proficiency is far behind China's and South Korea's.
South Korea's domestic market is small [compared to Japan's], so major South Korean companies like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Hyundai concentrate more heavily on foreign markets.
This means that English is an essential skill for employees of South Korea's major companies. Parents in South Korea are very enthusiastic about giving their children a good education, and most dream of having them study abroad in places like the United States, Britain, Canada or Singapore.
The South Korean people's English skills have developed remarkably over the past 10 to 20 years. I believe this is because many companies require their employees to have good English skills.
China is also giving great importance to English in its educational system.
At Tsinghua University--equivalent in status to the University of Tokyo--about 20 percent of the classes are conducted in English. Hu Jintao, China's president and a Tsinghua graduate, is pushing the university to raise this ratio to 50 percent.
In addition, many Chinese students are very interested in studying abroad.
Hu and [Chinese Premier] Wen Jiabao are described as the "fourth generation" of Chinese leadership. I believe that by the time the sixth or seventh generation comes to power, people who studied in the United States will make up a significant portion of the leadership. Even now, people who studied in the United States or Britain are beginning to take on leadership positions.
Japan's English ability declining
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I have a sense that the level of English proficiency of most Japanese is declining.
In the past, many Japanese attended Harvard Business School [in Boston], but now only a small number from Japan study there. Most of the East Asian students now studying at Harvard Business School are either Chinese or South Korean.
Japanese companies and citizens have also become more inward-looking. I often hear about young people who are reluctant to study abroad or about employees who refuse to be posted to foreign countries.
Not only the world but Asia is leaving Japan behind in many fields. People may not realize it, but Japan as a nation is suffering from "Galapagos syndrome."
If things keep on this way, Japan's power and status will inevitably decline. The symptoms of this decline can already be noticed. As China, South Korea and other neighboring countries are advancing rapidly, the downward trend will probably accelerate and our country goes nowhere.
English as an official language
ReplyDeleteQ: What can the government do to enhance Japan's English proficiency?
A: One idea is to make English an official language. These kind of drastic policy changes are necessary to change the current situation.
This could include measures such as allowing companies to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange using English documents.
It might also be wise to use English documents in ministries without translating them into Japanese. Many English documents are used in government ministries, but they are always translated into Japanese.
National universities should also be required to conduct a certain percentage of their classes in English, possibly 20 percent to 30 percent.
Q: You said that young people are becoming more inward-looking. How can we encourage introverted young people to study abroad?
A: There are limits to how much only advising young people to study abroad will work. Unless we create a system where people who have studied abroad receive preferential treatment in society, young people will not want to.
Recently it can be said that people face disadvantages after studying overseas. We need to give young people incentives, like increasing the demand for people who have studied abroad. For example, companies could motivate people to study in another country by requiring prospective employees to have reached a certain score on an English proficiency test.
A while ago, Mr. Minoru Makihara, the former president of Mitsubishi Corp., tried to make English the company's official language. I think that trading companies, who are engaged in global business, should have this kind of spirit. However, such voices are seldom heard from the industry.
Sakakibara obtained a doctorate in economics at University of Michigan after entering the Finance Ministry. He served as vice finance minister for international affairs from 1997-99. He is now president of the Institute for Indian Economic Studies in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

Huu ni upotoshaji - ama wa makusudi au usio wa makusudi. Wachina, Wajerumani nk nk hawakuanza na Kiingereza ili kukuza uchumi wao. Baada ya uchumi kukua wakarudi kwenye lugha zao. Hii si kweli. Lakini nyie mnakazana kusema na kuonyesha hivyo. Huo ni uongo. Kilichoanza ni lugha kwanza halafu uchumi ulifuata. Wachina uchumi wao unakuwa kwa kasi sana kipindi hiki - si kwa sababu wanaongea Kiingereza! Tafadhali tusipotoshane. Kama tunataka uchumi wetu ukuwe basi tufanye kazi kwa bidii, tuwe watoa huduma wazuri, tuondoe rushwa, tuzalishe.... Yote haya yanahitaji uongozi mzuri ambao Tz inakosa. kuongea Kiingereza wakati huna cha kuuza haikusaidii nje. Hebu tuelezeni ni nini ambacho tumeshindwa kuuza nje kwa sababu tunaongea Kiswahili?
ReplyDeleteSiyo kila Mchina au Mjapan anafanya biashara ya Kimataifa na kwa hiyo anahitaji kujua Kiingereza. Yapo makampuni yanayofanya kazi hiyo na yana watu wanaongea Kiingereza, Kifaransa, Kijerumani...kutegemeana na nchi wanazofanya nazo biashara. Hata huko UK ambako wote wanaongea Kiingereza kama lugha yao ya kuzaliwa si wote wanafanya biashara ya kimataifa.
Vivyo hivyo kwa Watanzania. Wenye nia ya kufanya kazi UN, watajifunza Kiingereza, Kifaransa, na lugha nyingine muhimu za UN. Wenye kutaka kufanya biashara ya kimataifa watafanya hivyo au kuajiri wanaoweza kuongea lugha husika bila ya kusubiri serikali kuwafanyia hivyo.
Wajibu wa serikali ni kudmisha utamaduni wetu. Kiswahili ni lugha yetu tuitumie (Mkuchika). Kiingereza ni ya kimataifa - nayo tuikazanie (Maghembe). Ujumbe kwa Mghembe: Walimu wa kufundisha Kiingereza hawapo. Serikali ilikazanie hili.

pili nikaangalia nchi zinazoendelea kwa kasi na lugha wanazotumia. nikagungua hakuna nchi iliyoendelea bila lugha yake isipokuwa nchi zilizoruhusu uhuru wa wageni kuja na kuishi kama kwao mf USA na SA. sisi bado hatutaki wageni.
lakini bado nikashangaa kuona pamoja na kututawala bado wanafanya juhudi sana kutujua. wanajifunza lugha yetu kwa nguvu zote pamoja na tamaduni zetu. wanataka kutujua kwa undani ndo maana wanakazania lugha yao itumike. sisi hatuoni hilo.
kwa kifupi lugha yako inakusaidia kuelewa haraka na hata kutumia muda mwingine kufikiria mambo ya ubunifu badala ya kutumia muda mwingi kujifunza (craming).

ReplyDeletekwanza kabisa nakubaliana na mdau kalikali kwa maoni yake mazuri. mimi naona hawa viongozi wetu hawajui wanachokifanya. mimi napinga kabisa lugha ya kiswahili itumike kama "lugha ya kutolea elimu mashuleni na vyuo. kwanza kabisa Tumeshahelewa leo huwezi niambia kwamba mitaala (syllabus)yote ya masomo mashuleni na vyuo vibadilishwe kwa lugha ya kiswahili. Tusifanya mchezo na elimu...wenzetu wanatumia mabilioni ya mapato yao ya taifakwenye elimu. Tanzania inatumia asilimia ngapi ya kipato cha taifa kwenye elimu ukilinganisha na matumizi ya JWTZ?
Elimu si lugha tu yakufundishia kama vile watu wengi wanavyofikiria, kuna vingi vinavyofanya elimu iwe bora.
Wajapani, Wakorea, Wajerumani, Wanorwejiani na wote wanaotumia lugha zao kama lugha za kufundishia, wanatoa pia kipaumbele lugha za kigeni.
Hapa Norway kuna wanafunzi wenye asili ya kuzungumza Kiswahili, wanaruhusiwa kufanya mitahani ya vidato kwa lugha ya Kiswahili kama wakitaka.
Nasema hivyo si porojo tu, huwa nasahihisha kati ya mitihani 8 hadi 13 kwa mwaka.
Watu wanaosema Kiswahili hakijitoshelezi kama lugha ya kisayansi, hawa sijui huwa wanaishi dunia ipi au karne gani?
Wanorwejiani wanafundishwa kwa lugha yao,pamoja na kuwa kila kukicha wanatohoa maneno mapya na kuifanya lugha yao kuendelea.
Utafiti wa kisayansi, unaonyesha kuwa lugha yoyote ile inazidi kukua kwa kufundishwa kwenye fani zote.
Kwani hata kama hiyo lugha (mathalani Kiswahili) haina misamiati, ikiwa inafunndishwa watu wanalazimika kutoa maneno ili lugha iweze kufundikishika.
Tusije tukasema mpaka kijitosheleze ndio tukifanye lugha ya kufundishia. Haitawezekana hata siku moja.
Kiingereza chenyewe kinakua kila siku kwa sababu ya kufundishwa.
Miaka 10 tu iliyopita hakukuwa na neno kama iPhone, HTC, BlueBerry, Google, lakini kutokana nawakati inabidi kijiweke vizuri kutokana na wakati.
Sasa Kiswahili hakitumiki halafu tunasema tungoje. Mambo mangapi yanabadilika kila siku kweli tutayafikia kama hakitumiki?
Mbona HIV na AIDS ilipoanza hakukuwa na neno VVU na UKIMWI?
Lakini wataalamu wa lugha walikaa na kuyatohoa. Sasa kwanini ishindikane kwa maneno mengine kama kweli tunataka kiwe cha kitaamu na kisayansi?
Tusije tukawa kama wakati flani tulipoambiwa kuwa:
"Lazima tuweke umeme Tanzania nzima ndipo tuwe na televisheni"
Mbona mpaka leo hakuna umeme kila kijiji? Tungesubiri tungekuwa kweli na televisheni Tanzania?

Kiswahili kinaweza kabisa kuwa lugha ya kutumia mashuleni na kikaenda sambamba kabisa na lugha ya Kiingereza, Kifaransa, Kihispania kama lugha ya somo.
Hapa ina maana lazima tuwe na waalimu wazuri wa somo la Kiingereza. Tuwe na waalimu wengi wanaofundisha shule za msingi wenye shahada za kwanza.
Iwekwe mikakati kuwa waalimu wa shule za msingi kiwango cha mwisho kiwe diploma.
ili wanafunzi kiwaingie kichwani vizuri. Kiingereza kama somo kiwe na vitabu vinavyokwenda na wakati. Wanafunzi wahamasishwe wazungumze Kiingereza kama somo.
Inawezekana kabisa, wanafunzi waweze kutumia Kiingereza kama somo na huku Kiswahili kiwe lugha ya kufundishia.
Mimi ni mwalimu Mtanzania, naishi Norway. Nimesoma kwa Kinorwejiani kama lugha ya kufundishia na Kiingereza kiko kama somo la lugha.
Nimemaliza na naweza kuzungumza na kuandika Kiingereza sio kwa sababu nimesoma na Kiingereza kama lugha ya kufundishia, la hasha!
Kiingereza kilikuwa ni kama somo la lugha.
Nimeajiriwa kufundisha sekondari sio kwa sababu ya kujua Kiingereza, hapana. Nimeajiriwa kwa sababu nazungumza Kinorwejiani na nina makaratasi yanayotambulika na nimeyasomea hapa hapa.
Wewe ukijana Kiingereza chako, watu watakusikiliza, halafu watakuuliza unajua kuzungumza Kinorwejiani? Hujui hupati kitu.
Tofauti ni kuwa: Waalimu hapa wanaofundisha shule za msingi lazima wawe na shahada ya kwanza ya kufundishia. Shule za msingi zina mpaka waalimu wenye shahada za uzamili!!!!
Sasa mwalimu huyu huwezi kumlinganisha kabisa na mwalimu wa shule ya msingi aliyemaliza darasa la saba na kwenda chuyo cha ualimu na kupata daraja C la kufundishia.
Isitoshe mwalimu huyu mazingira anayofundishia ni duni. Mshahara haumfikishi hata wiki.

ReplyDeleteGovt challenges varsities to improve English

The government has tasked universities to come up with a comprehensive strategy that will improve the English language in primary and secondary schools in the country.
Opening a three-day Higher Education Forum 2010 in Arusha yesterday, Education and Vocational Training minister Prof Jumanne Maghembe said the level of English in Tanzanian primary and secondary schools was alarming, calling for urgent measures to improve the situation.
“If this trend is left as it is, our people will certainly not be able to compete in the competitive world,” he said, adding: “Each university council should come up with a strategy that will address this challenge in the schools.”
He further said that in last year’s Standard Seven exams, only 30 per cent of primary school pupils passed their exams and that such a trend needed to be reversed.
The minister asked the universities to come up with better English textbooks, teaching and learning materials, which would be instrumental in uplifting the standard of the language in schools.
According to Maghembe, most textbooks in the market are business-oriented and so they cannot help pupils and students meet the required standards.
He said the English language played an important role in the current world and there was, therefore, an urgent need to teach it with seriousness.
“English teachers need to be well-trained. This way we can be sure of their capability to teach professionally and competently,” Maghembe noted.
He also called on universities to address the problem of poor performance in mathematics and science subjects in schools.
“Most of science books were written in the 1940s and some of them are outdated. So, our universities should work on this to make science books relevant to the current world,” he noted.
Commenting on rapid advances in science and technology, the minister said most universities in the country had not done enough in research, so it was time for them to reposition themselves to address human resource challenges in a more holistic approach.
“They need to produce the type of human resources capable of transforming and bringing about socio-economic development,” he stressed.
The minister further called upon higher education facilities to seriously engage in innovative and long-term research as other universities do.
“Universities must do research which contributes to the country’s economic development. Unfortunately, due to increased enrolment and pressure for quick results, our varsities have concentrated more on teaching and doing more academic research for the sake of promotions,” he said.
The minister also asked universities to collaborate with other international universities to improve in research.
“The government has opened up other new opportunities for our universities to collaborate with Turkish and Algerian universities and research institutions,” he said.
He explained that the universities should not only conduct research but also publish research results in easily retrievable sources like in journals which are accessible to a broad-cross section of scientists.

Mayunga Nkunya said the forum was meant to address challenges facing universities in the country.
He said the forum brought on board all heads of higher learning institutions from both the public and private sectors.
The forum's theme is: 'Universities for sustainable development: Trends, prospects and challenges.'

ReplyDeleteMany Tanzanians are not offered senior positions in their professions despite having same qualifications as foreigners because they lack skills of expressing themselves during interviews, it has been learnt.
The remarks were made recently by See Vee Director Gloria Jacobs at an interview with The Guardian in Dar es Salaam.
She said that many Tanzanians failed to get employment because they relied on people they knew to get them jobs instead of using their skills to impress their interviewers.
She said that according to a research she conducted recently, some of the graduates were going without jobs because they lacked good expression skills.
Jacob stressed that many firms were owned by foreign investors who targeted people with good command of English in managerial positions.
She noted that despite many Tanzanians being highly educated; quite a number of them did not have good commands of the English language, thereby failing to express themselves well during interviews.
“Many lack good command of English to express themselves or during presentations, thus losing the opportunities to attain big positions in their careers,” she said.
Elaborating, she said that the education given was not meant to prepare people to speak perfect English, but to pass exams. She added that many students did not practice to speak English at home or in school compounds.
Jacob plans to work with university graduates to help them in a number of areas including understanding how to express themselves, write curriculum vitae and cover letters.
She said that she also planned to help them learn how to approach their employers and how to answer psychological questions that looked easy but needed attentive answers.

Kwa ufupi tu ni kuwa hatujui lugha. Hatujui Kiswahili wala lugha za kigeni. Mchokoza mada mwenyewe tunaona ameandika 'sekondali' badala ya sekondari.
ReplyDeleteKibaya zaidi hatuna vitabu vilivyoandikwa kwa Kiswahili-hata vitabu vya hadithi tu kama vya Willy Gamba na Joram Kiango enzi hizo. Inawezekana idadi ya vitabu vya hadithi vya Kiswahili inazidiwa na vitabu vya James Hadley Chase. Kitu pekee tunachoweza kukisoma ni magazeti. Magazeti yanashindana kuwa na sura ya kiumbeya umbeya tu huku yakiandikwa kwa lugha isiyoeleweka.

"Nanihii wa Ulaya"
"Nanihii amefulia"
Suala lililopo sio suala la "ama... au...". Ni suala la "... na ...". Tunatakiwa kujua lugha nyingi iwezekanavyo kwa ufasaha ili tuweze kufaidi matunda ya utandawazi. Tujue vema Kiswahili, Kiingereza, Kifaransa, Kiarabu, Kihispania nk. Ili kufanikisha hilo inabidi tutengeneze mazingira kwa walimu wa ngazi mbalimbali kufundisha kwa ufanisi.
Inawezekana? NDIO.
Tuna nia hiyo? HAPANA.

Pamoja na kuunga mkono matumizi ya Kiswahili kama lugha ya kufundishia, nasisitiza pia kuwa Kiingereza (na lugha nyingine za kimataifa) kifundishwe kama somo kwa kufuata misingi ya ufundishaji wa somo hilo. Mtu akijua Kiingereza kama lugha, anaweza kuyatafsiri mambo aliyojifunza kwa Kiswahili na kuelwa kwa kutumia Kiingereza pale inapobidi. Mimi kwa kuwa najua kuongea Kiingereza naweza kumwambia mzungu wa Uingereza mambo ambayo nayajua kwa lugha ya kabila (hata kama mambo hayo sijawahi kujifunza darasani).
Wanaokazania matumizi ya Kiingereza kuendelea kuwa lugha ya kufundishia wanadhani kuwa uamuzi wa kutumia Kiswahili unaifuta kabisa lugha hiyo isifundishwe kabisa. Hiyo si nia ya watetezi wa Kiswahili hata kidogo. Hoja ya watetezi wa Kiswahili ni kuwa wakati Kiswahili kikitumika kama lugha ya kufundishia Kiingereza kifundishwe kama somo tu ili wanafunzi waelewe lugha hiyo na kuitumia kwa ufasaha inapohitajika. Wazo hili linakwenda pamoja na hoja kwamba Kiingereza siyo nyenzo ya kumwezesha mwanafunzi kujua mada ya somo. Kujua vema hesabu, fizikia, Kemia, kutumia Computer,n.k. hakutegemea mtu kujua Kiingereza. Na hapa tunaweza kusema kuwa si wote wanaojua kuongea Kiingereza wana maarifa bora vichwani mwao kuliko wanaotumia lugha zao.
Tukitaka Tanzania tupige hatua kielimu, hatuna budi kuzingatia kuikuza lugha yetu kwa kuitumia ipasavyo katika swala zima la kurithisha maarifa kwa watoto wetu.
