  10. Hapo mmenene ukweli kwa yote yale.

However, with all due respect to the Peace Corp (American), they really need to change their modus operandi in 2010 and beyond, when it comes to dealing and interacting with African countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya etc.

Gone are the days, like in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s, when many of the Peace Corps volunteers would flood a particular region and try to implement "personal project" that ended up dying the moment they left their asigned stations.

Secondly, it's my opinion that some of them view their two year stint (asignment) in various African and Asian countries as an adventure similar to that of David Livingstone and his comrades from a bygone era, and they usually misuse the opportunity as an avenue for advancing their own personal gains, and consequent upgrading of their profesuional or academic, when they return back to America.

Many have been known seek book deals, write thesis, employment, and what have you on everything African, the moment they return home.

I see no wrong in them doing that, because the are free to do so. When all is dais and done, the end does not justify the means.

However, I would like to see the Peace Corps Movement change its modus operandi, and sent more qualified personnel whose impact will be felt several decades later after their departure.

How about, they be given adequate resources to reconstruct nursery schools, primary schools, secondary schools, village polytechnics, and clinics in various areas of Tanzania?

Critical infrastructure is what the disavantage (less fortunate) people and regions of Tanzania need and not the presence of another semi-permanent tourist (mtali/social worker).

Of course "the ways and means" (wherewithal) to enable them achieve the above mentioned is within their reach in this day and age.

With all due respect, there is no need to ship (fly) out an American mzungu to the hinterlands or remote to do what locals - student from various Tanzanian universities - can do better given some stipends from the same organizations, once they have graduated from their colleges and universities.

There are so African villages that have had so many Peace Corps volunteers asigned to to them from the 1960s uptil the mid 2000s, but there is very little or nothing to show for or even let the generations know that the Peace corps voluteers were once there (here).

Why are they still trying to reinvent the wheel rather than try new ways of engaging the local communities and hence sustain projects or whatever it is that brought to Tanzania and others African countries in the first place?

This is not a personal attack but a personal constructive obeservation from a concerned Tanzania, from a village and region that have willingly welcomed so many volunteers with opeen arms, minds and hearts in the last several decades.
