THE CONTRIBUTION OF FRENCH RESEARCHERS TO THE STUDY OF KISWAHILI LANGUAGE:
THE STUDY CASE CHARLES SACLEUX (1856-1943)

Charles Sacleux (1856-1943) is a French priest who lived in East Africa in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. As an expert in Kiswahili language, he is known for his work on Kiswahili grammar and phonetics. But he is renowned for the French-Kiswahili dictionary which was published in 1939. His dictionary is still a reference for etymological research, a sort of encyclopedia.
